I can see CR wanting to get on PS3 before Neon Alley and launched without their back end fully up to the task. It also explains why they announced the Vita app when it appears that won't be ready for a long while.

Thanks Sentai/Section 23 for picking up Gintama, the product you'll put out will satisfy many, and hopefully get the franchise some new fans. Sadly, I can't support that kind of release at this time.

That explanation doesn't explain a similar roll-out for their Apple app and their Android app. A more likely explanation is that this lets them get the kinks worked out for a basic set of capabilities, so that its easier to track down the source of the problems that will show up when they extend the capabilities.

Its also likely why they introduce premium member support first, and then roll out free member support, so problems caused by the ad-server are easier to pin down.

Update: Speak of the devil, just over a week after release, they just released their first patch:

[Update on Aug 8th] We just released a patch and the performance should be much better. If you still experience technical issue, please post your comment on the PS3 help forum. Enjoy watching more shows

This is great news...now if only I could convince my mother to buy a longer ethernet cable and/or wireless router, so I can finally connect my PS3 to the internet, lol.

For the hell of it, I decided to install the CR app on my PS3. Interface isn't terrible and watching videos at 480p is like watching a DVD on my TV. Overall...meh; good, but not great.

Maybe once CR gets at least 720p going and I have more than 1 show to watch through them, I'll use it more.

Crunchyroll...now in HD on the PlayStation 3! And we're giving away a PS3 to celebrate!

Hi guys ~ ! This is Victoria with a VERY SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT for Crunchyroll users!

BECAUSE YOU DEMANDED IT…. Crunchyroll has launched high-definition 720p streams for its entire library and simulcast lineup on the PlayStation®3!

Before now, the PS3™ app was only serving up anime in enhanced-definition 480p, but all that has changed and CRUNCHYROLL TAKES SIMULCASTS INTO HIGH DEFINITION ON THE PS3™. Anime fans can now enjoy shows with subtitles within minutes of Japan TV broadcast, including hits like NARUTO SHIPPUDEN, SWORD ART ONLINE, SPACE BROTHERS, and HUNTER X HUNTER in HD!!!

A spectacular announcement like this requires an equally slam-bastic contest ~ !!!

Many of you already know this, but for those of you that don’t, Vampy and I are hosting a VERY SPECIAL CRUNCHYROLL PS3 GIVEAWAY ~ !!!!!!

1080p would be nice, but for now at least the app is worth using, since they're all basically upscaled from 720p anyway. I'll probably be using that quite a bit now.
