At the very least they didn't go the route I feared they would. I was thinking they'd do a very sterile white, black and red motif.
I think I would have preferred that greatly.

Really? I thought this was one of the best new anime to come out in the past few years. It's fast-paced, has nice character development, and has the feel of classic shows before the simultaneous censorship, moe, and bishounen crazes. To each his own, I guess...
I enjoyed it enough to buy it eventually even without Blu-ray and with an ugly cover, but I found it incredibly stupid. I can suspend my disbelief quite a bit, but this show just went so over-the-top it was ridiculous. And while I don't mind violence in my anime, this just felt like they were getting off to the gore and seeing how far they could push it.
The over-the-top-ness (while still maintaining a legit story and not just being a comedy show) is part of what made it so enjoyable for me. But then again, I treat Yu-Gi-Oh 5D's duel runner duels as serious business as well, so...

But I hear ya; I don't like gratuitous gore either (I dropped Gantz and Elfen Lied because I felt the exact way you described) however I got the complete opposite feeling with Deadman. I thought they managed to keep it relevant to the story; I think scenes such as sparing Hummingbird from the penalty game wouldn't have made such an impact if we didn't cringe so much at Crow's penalty. And I thought Nagi's even if the odds were infinitely worse than .5/100 was particularly inspiring after such a gruesome battle too.

No Blu-ray = no buy.

It fits pretty good, but I don't think I'll get the LE.

Updated cover art added to the first post (take from YouTube trailer). The colors and shadings shading are off, but at least we get a better idea of what it would look like now.

I'm not too sure how I feel about the banner or smiley faces, but I do much prefer the new background coloring.

I don't like the new one at all... not at all. Same feeling for both. That's not an amelioration.

The updated version definitely looks better then the previous version. Everything just looks more well put together. Really looking forward to this release!
