::pops the first BD in:: Huh, what do you know, there are English subs, I hadn't bothered to look. Complete with honorifics thankfully. But name order is flipped which is annoying, though it's the smaller of the two standard problems. Granted I have no idea if/when I'll be rewatching this, and if I do will probably need to be BD rips anyway (since it probably won't be on my PC). But it's rare for a show I import to have subtitles on it, let alone subtitles I might be able to tolerate (although hard to know for sure from a quick skim). Too bad CR didn't have this from the start, although even if they did they probably wouldn't have used CR's subs.

What do you mean by "name order is flipped" exactly? It's probably just something obvious that I'm forgetting or that I don't know the Norwegian word(s) for.

I'm guessing he means the names are switched from eastern order (last, first) to western order (first, last), but I could be wrong.

Yes, I believe that's what something means.

Really? So if a character's name is Katou Marika, and someone calls her Katou-san, then Katou would be unacceptable, but Marika-san would be less annoying? That seems backwards to me...

No biggie for me anyway. Guess I'll watch the first cour to see if it's worth importing. EngSub is always nice.

Oh no that's not what I mean at all. Name order flipping is different from given/family replacement (granted those aren't official terms, so I don't know what others call them).

Flipping is Katou Marika → Marika Katou
Replacement is Katou → Marika or Katou-san → Marika-san

Replacement is definitely completely, utterly, outrageously unacceptable but is thankfully rare even in the worst of the commercial translations and virtually nonexistent in fansubs. The LB! BD subs do not do this at all, Naoe-san is Naoe-san.

Flipping is annoying, but since anime characters (in most shows) don't say full names all that much, it's not something that is encountered more than once or twice in a normal episode. It took a decent amount of skimming around to find an example in this volume of LB!, for instance. I'll give heavy preference to subs that don't do this, but it isn't necessarily a deal-breaker if I have no other options - granted, I usually do have options - unless it's one of those shows where full names come up constantly. (Don't dare touch Ayano's "TOSHINOU KYOUKO!", for example.)

Oh, duh. That makes sense.

Well, this is a nice surprise. I don't import the singles, but I may import a complete box (hoping it would include the mail-in episode). It's good that the honorifics are there... but would be better if the name order were not flipped.

It is great that Crunchyroll picked this up for legal streaming in 1080p. I wasn't going to buy this but it looks gorgeous so I might change my mind about importing it.

Honestly it is tough to know what to call Japanese people these days, especially in English. Some like to be called familyname-san even in English. Some like family name without an honorific. Others like to be called simply by their given name. Still others like to be called firstname-san. Some will call me Harry san, others Pulley san, even in English. Others just Harry. Or Harry Potter...

Even in Japanese it is not simple; in casual conversation it is nothing like Japanese class, that's for sure... I was taught to never say anata except to very close family but it seems to be common now in casual conversation. And I was taught not to say watashi or use other personal pronouns for myself unless absolutely necessary but again, they seem to use them a lot these days, perhaps because english uses I and me quite often.

My pet peeve is when the character says oniisan and the subbers replace it with the older brother's name instead... Ugh... This is why I prefer no subs generally unless the main subject is such that I don't know half the words. Hearing the Japanese and reading bad subs just makes my head hurt!

All true enough, but not really a relevant concern when it comes to translating with subtitles. The show's original writers already decided upon a form of address by virtue of writing the dialogue the character spoke. If the character said "givenname-san" then you've already got your answer. All the subs need to do is accurately reflect what was said. What you're talking about is rather different (an interesting topic, but very different).
