Why? It's good they're releasing something, but S2 before S1? I won't even bother picking this up unless I know for certain they'll be releasing S1 as well.

How do you know Funimation even has rights to release season 1 on Blu-Ray? Aniplex may be planning on releasing it themelves for all we know...

Well Season 2 was released in Japan on Blu-ray during it's initial release, season 1 was not. Season 1 was released as a BD-Box two years later.

Either way I'm sure they'll pull a Spice & Wolf eventually with this series, but even then no one knew they'd be releasing Season 1 of Spice & Wolf on BD. It isn't their standard to release prior seasons on Blu-ray if they're releasing the next season on Blu-ray. Aniplex or Funimation will probably eventually release Darker Than Black season 1 on BD eventually, but who knows how much that'd cost to license, it's one of the best selling Blu-ray boxes in Japan, not that it really matters I think.

Bit of an instant fail without season 1.

I continue not to understand why this is "fail".

It wasn't released on BD until much later in Japan, that's a completely different license from what we've been told. They might not even get the HD masters from that set too, that's seriously not worth it. Season 2 was released on BD as it was released in Japan, that's why there's a Blu-ray here.

Yeah I'm not really surprised and don't necessarily mind them releasing S2 on BD first (as long as they eventually do get back to an S1 Blu-ray) rather than further delaying it and then going back to S1 afterwards for a BD re-release since S1 came out so long ago, love the franchise so I'll be picking this up and glad to have some great DTB blu-ray goodness and keep strongly hoping that they eventually release Season 1 on BD too since it totally deserves it.

It's fail because people who didn't buy the first season because they were waiting for BD, still won't buy the 2nd season (even though there IS a BD) because they still haven't even gotten to see the first season. At least that's the boat I'm in.
