Crunchyroll Apps to Launch on PlayStation 3 and Samsung TVs

Anime streaming expands on both platforms this summer

Just announced at today’s Anime Expo, Crunchyroll is bringing its anime streaming application to two new platforms this summer, with the addition of Crunchyroll to the PlayStation 3 system and Samsung Smart TVs. An app for PlayStation Vita is also set to follow later this year.

Availability of the PlayStation 3 application will start off in the U.S. and Canada, and Crunchyroll will offer a 30-day free trial for users who download the app from PlayStation Network.

Those who have access to a Samsung Smart TV will be able to get the Crunchyroll app via the Samsung Smart TV Smart Hub in July.

That’s right; Crunchyroll is coming to PS3 and Samsung Smart TV! You may now start dancin’ in the streets.

Watch All the Anime You Want with Crunchyroll on PS3

::: clipped portion from the article :::

Crunchyroll on PS3 currently only supports up to 480p, which Gao explained to me was a fairly standard resolution for anime, as it’s more expensive to produce shows in higher quality. So even at 480p, most anime will be viewable on PS3 in its native resolution, though that will still fluctuate depending on the shows you’re interested in.

Haha, look at that spin, jeeze. On their main site they brag about their 1080p streams; on their PS3 app they're like "oh you don't need more than 480p anyway".

Total nonsense. Not that I have any reason to use my PS3 to watch their stuff when I have a perfectly good PC.

Well, that has to be a record for me to go from euphoria to disappointment (I've been out of the loop). I'll just get a HDMI cable for my laptop. 480p isn't worth even bothering.

It certainly doesn't... I was curious about it, but now I'll forget completely about it.

Bah...that sucks. I was looking forward to checking out CR on the PS3. Shoddy or lazy programming? Sounds like they might be using the videos encoded for the mobile app since that's probably around 480p.

Ugh. So no point in getting the PS3 app. I'm better off just watching it on my computer.

And that's some pretty hilarious(ly rage inducing) PR at best, and closer to a flat out lie. Sure, its a "fairly standard resolution" in the sense that almost all anime is still released on DVD.... but virtually all of them are now animated in something higher than that. Only a handful of shows have been released only in DVD since I started importing and I'm not sure if anything has NOT gotten a Blu-Ray release in the past year or so. I suppose some of those could still be upscales but those would be rare.

If they stopped at the "fairly standard resolution" part, that would be pretty bullshit but could still be construed as being technically true. But they're bordering on outright lie territory by using the term "native resolution". They might still be in the "PR bullshit technically true" zone by virtue of their huge backlog of shows, which might mean the majority of what they have on their site is still native 480p. Maybe. But holy shit, is that stretching "technically true for PR speak" to its limits.

Though I guess its somewhat moot since this is a third party article and this portion isn't a direct quote. Still. Fucking liars.

Since I use my PS3 for CR from time to time, and 720p doesn't exactly load well, and on my setup, 480p looks pretty decent, I'm looking forward to this, as long as the app doesn't degrade video quality.

Besides, no one wants to sit in front of their PC all the time, right?

Well, there's the car... and sometimes a bed. I'm not familiar with any other non-computer locations. I think you're making things up!
