I've seen these lists on livedoor but hadn't posted before. Might as well do so, since it's not like most of them will change. Note, I am not merging this with the 2000 and later list because this list uses totals from rereleases and mixed boxsets. Hence how 1st Gundam can show a higher average than Bake, despite doing only 1/3rd as much in its first release. I think it's better to let this list stand on its own, given that much of it is pre-DVD and the market is just so much different today, in so many ways.

I also excluded TV specials and made-for-TV movies.

Comments:
- Small list! Even if it's incomplete, it looks so tiny. We've had 82 in the past 11.5 years but only 38 in the 30+ years before it.
- Moreso when you compare first-run sales. Only 16 series reached the 10,000 level before 2000.
- Both these points of course reflect a very different market, where OVAs, not TV series, once dominated. There are more TV anime in Spring 2011 than in most years back then.
- It also shows how shocking Evangelion's success really is. Nearly half the shows on this list are in the short period 1995-1999, and half of the first-run 10k series. Something was changing.

- Shows occasionally took off only later. Nadia is the most shocking example. Virtually nothing, then 34k. Kenshin looks to me like an example of the target audience getting older and having jobs when it's rereleased. It should also see an increase with the upcoming release. One Piece is another example, although the boxsets are also relatively cheap.

- Sunrise, as ever, dominates. Both total and first-run. Toei too, back then.
- "Kidou" is the magic word.

Note: The iDOLM@STER tally includes Gravure For You Game+BD bundles. It is impossible to determine what percentage of G4U sales can be attributed primarily to the anime BD. Because Vol. 1 came with the full PS3 game which sold 80-100k, which cannot realistically be counted all as anime sales, sales are being calculated as follows: Vol. 1-9 standalone DVD avg + Vol. 1-9 standalone BD avg + Vol. 2-9 G4U bundle avg. For example, as of 3/05/2012 and the 2nd week of Vol. 5, that's 1,633 + 6,466 + 17,474 = 25,573.
Note: Code Geass (season 1) tally no longer includes a 5,185 BD average (v1-4, v5-9 did not rank as only yearly lists were available for BDs back then and they didn't make the cut).
