As long as it can still be posted (in the next thread down in the sticky list) it's fine. There's some overlap between the two topics but they do tend to come at different times (data on Tuesday/Thursday, rest of the week tends to be speculation-related). Plus there are times I've held off on posting something speculation-related because it felt a little too trivial, or maybe I felt like I'd posted too much of that between official data posts - but there's no real worry if there's a dedicated thread for it. Not saying we need hourly updates on every shift in the numbers or anything, but it does loosen things up a bit. Plus it helps keep the post count from getting too bloated if we spread it out. These forums are, as anyone using it regularly knows, prone to performance hiccups, for which trying to find something in an 1100 post thread is not really ideal (especially for those who prefer linear, though I use threaded).

But most importantly this has been a rather civil/friendly thread for a couple years now, so I don't want hard feelings/arguments to affect that over something that has a decent if perhaps imperfect solution. Let's just call that the end of the debate.

@Something

I have sent you a PM about why I think such artificial separation does not make sense (except for the purists) and why I think it just discourages sales discussions of any kind.

To be honest, I am very much put off by the suggestion that sales discussion should be separated into released titles and not yet released titles. Just imagine that now I need to talk about JoJo vol.1 performance in the other thread, and then 10 days later I need to switch it to this thread; and then the same needs to happen again one month later for vol.2, and so on. Just to please the purists who are skeptical (in my opinion overly so) about the usefulness of Amazon Stalker data. What they need should be a newsletter thread that gives only results. A sales thread should allow discussion of all titles, released or not.

I thought we are having some solid debates over this and I am surprised to see that a decision seems to be made already in very very short time. Very disappointed.

I replied to the PM, so after this post I'd prefer to continue it there.

While I can foresee some (limited) situations where the split could be cumbersome, I don't think it'll be a common problem. What you describe would be annoying if it were a daily occurrence - but it's not really how we discuss sales here, or how I've seen them discussed anywhere. Sure you might say something about Jojo Vol. 2 now, and again after it gets released, but it's very likely that they'll be two different kinds of comments, with no direct continuity between each other, and there will be no real need for anyone to have read the first post to understand the latter. Now I'm sure we could dream up hypothetical situations where it would be an issue, but that's very different from realistic posting scenarios. I think they're by and large two different kinds of discussions.

There are logistical problems with this, such as how to structure the direct replies to the data. If someone has to switch threads to post a reply to something said in another thread, that is what would really discourage posting, I think. Splitting like this, while imperfect, at least keeps the source and continuation of a discussion together in ways having a data only thread could not.

As for the motives, the "purists" are established community members I've known for a long time, in some cases for many years, so that carries some weight (I've heard from others beyond the two posts here as well). I know they're not just complaining for the sake of complaining like anonymous trolls on a blog post. I wouldn't have paid any attention if that were the case. This also isn't the first time this request has been made either (though it was made better this time, or maybe I just understood it better). I don't think there are any villains here, just maybe some exaggerated arguments at worst.

Again, I'm not convinced of the necessity of this change, however I am convinced of its reasonableness, and that the negative effects are very small, and that there are some potential advantages too. I really do think Mania is a small enough community that we should be able to make it work with minimal friction.

In any case it's 1AM and I reallllllly need to go to bed if I'm going to be up in a few hours to get the sales data (and uh, be conscious at work) so I'll check for PMs later, but you might just want to sleep on it too (granted I have no idea what time it is where you are. ). I think it'll work out.

I just want to say that there's no law that says we can only have one or even two threads. It's just a preference. For all it matters, you could choose to have an entire sub-forum dedicated to JP sales-related topic and have different threads for each new piece of news. Given the pace of discussion, it may not be so futile, and I know some people who prefer things that way too (though that extreme isn't my personal preference either). Personally, I see the topics as distinct, and I think there's enough discussion that warrant separation, and "results-only" isn't really what I'm seeking either. Having everything in one long discussion thread makes it easier in some ways, but also makes this thread really long and unwieldy (granted that I prefer flat thread navigation, vs. vBulletin's quasi-threaded mode).

Anyway... I want to say thanks to something for the consideration and I hope that this can give both topics more room to grow and find their own styles/themes/approaches. And if there are more sub-topics that warrant their own threads, I would probably support those splits too for whatever it's worth. There's certainly enough interest in this general topic, in my view.

And, also, sorry for the off-topic tangent. (In the interest of fairness to the topic-splitting/topic-focus intent, it may be better even to split this tangent to its own thread so it doesn't get in the way of the sales discussion. I suppose I could have started it there, but wasn't sure if that was better or worse.)

Jojo is looking pretty huge whatever the reason. It could easily match Chuunibyou's opening week if Stalker's numbers (~13.5k) are spot on, and will be higher if there's any degree of under-estimation going on.

Of course it could also be getting overestimated (it has been accumulating points for a month longer than most of the December releases after all) but I don't think the effect will be too big if so, because it's been a frequent presence in a number of the B&M rankings as well.

Should be a clear lock to average 10k.
In my best Speedwagon voice.... "JOOOOJOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!

10k would be awesome, would guarantee a sequel to animate part 3 which alone would take up two cours.... worst case scenario I just start reading the manga but I would love to see most of Jojo animated.

Holy crap, that GirlPan restock. KuroBas fandisc too.

Fall update:
Zetsuten v1 sells 884/1027, total 1,911. That's with an event ticket, and I just noticed this is set to be ~12 volumes. Ouch.

Robotics;Notes v1 sells 1,235 BDs, DVDs do not rank. Steins;Gate this obviously is not.

Psycho-Pass v2 sells 5197/1557, total 6,754. This is up 19.4% on v1wk1. Whether this means this volume is just more front-loaded with more people buying it in the opening week, or whether it'll actually sell more, remains to be seen.
v1 adds 330 BDs, total 8,644 in wk6.

Hidamari v2 sells 5537/1096, total 6,633. More of an event ticket drop than I would like (25.6%), but if it can stay consistent it should average 7k.

Busou Shinki v2 sells 2132/632, total 2,764.

Kaibutsu-kun v3 sells 1062/770, total 1,832.

Shinsekai Yori v3 sells 462 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

BTOOOM! v3 sells 345 BDs, DVDs do not rank. First time it's ranked in either format.

GirlPan v1 adds 3853 BDs, total 23,029. That's a, uh, rather large sixth week. It's the second biggest week so far, much larger than wk2.

Chuunibyou v2 adds 1263 BDs, total 15,384. Significantly smaller second week than v1, maybe this will be more typical going forward. v1's 1.7k was quite large.

Initial D Fifth v1 adds 1105, total 9,780. Easy lock for 10k if it can just rank one more time (or monthly lists fall the right way).

K v4 adds 271 BDs, total 7,063.

Summer update:
Sword Art Online v4 sells 24247/5462, total 29,709.
v1 adds 298 BDs, total 44,629.
v3 adds 392 BDs, total 36,259.

Dog Days' v5 sells 4860/1679, total 6,539. Back in line with the somewhat lower wk1 of v4, but if it has a larger second weeklike that volume it will still be pretty consistent with the last two volumes.

Total Eclipse v5 sells 3407/596, total 4,003.

Joshiraku v4 sells 3327/659, total 3,986.

Kokoroko v4 sells 1,968 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

Utakoi v5 sells 675/777, total 1,452.

Boku wa H v4 sells 1,430 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

KoiChoco v5 sells 1,195 BDs, DVDs do not rank.

Ebiten v3 sells 415 BDs, DVDs do not rank. First time this show has ranked in either format.

Yuru Yuri♪♪ v5 adds 493 BDs, total 6,279.

Jintai v5 adds 331 BDs, total 4,820.

Past seasons:
Hyouka v8 sells 6670/1022, total 7,692. Little bit lower than v6-7wk1, closer to v5wk1. Wonder if it'll have the larger second week like v5 to make up for it. I definitely want to see the volume total stay above 9k. A wk2-3 identical to v7 would manage that though it'd still be below the ~9.4k of the past two volumes.

NatsuKise v7, final volume, sells 1862/632, total 2,494. Final average: 2,986.

SenColle v11 sells 728/1543, total 2,271.
v12, final volume, sells 740/1562, total 2,302
Current final average: 2,442.

Shirokuma v7 sells 834 DVDs. BD is Animate-exclusive (although, it's finally getting a wider release soon) and unavailable.

OVAs, Movies, Boxsets etc:
Utena BD Box v1 sells 3,961. No ¥100m list yet (¥95m), but next week ought to do it and the second half definitely will.

Star Driver BD Box sells 1,691.

SotaOto f BD Box sells 1,243.

Minami-ke BD Box adds 449, total 3,598. Bigger than wk2, the fourth season seems to be helping.

Next week, Hiiro 2, Medaka 2, Sakurasou, Jojo, and Magi.
