FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SENTAI FILMWORKS LICENSES
“K-ON! THE MOVIE”

HOUSTON, January 23, 2013 — It’s time for road trip with Sentai Filmworks’ newest acquisition: K-ON! The Movie. This theatrical follow-up to the ultra-popular TV series features work from K-ON! veterans Naoko Yamada (Director), Reiko Yoshida (Screenplay), Yukiko Horiguchi (Character Designs) and Hajime Hyakkoku (Music).

Graduation time is finally here, but the girls of the Sakuragaoka Girl's High Light Music Club aren’t going to let the end of high school be the end of all they’ve built together. First, though, they have to keep a promise to take a trip together, and like everything else they do, they’re not doing it halfway. So it’s time to hop on the bus - the double-decker bus that is - and go around the world as the band heads for the birthplace of the British Invasion: the United Kingdom! And on the way they’re going to have to solve that one last big puzzle that’s been vexing them: what to get for their underclassman rhythm guitarist Azusa, who will be taking over the club once they don their caps and gowns and leave Sakuragaoka for the last time. Get ready for a Magical Musical Tour as the whole gang takes in the sights and sounds of London and prepares for one last amazing encore in the climatic finale of K-ON! THE MOVIE!

K-ON! The Movie will be available soon through select digital outlets and on bilingual DVD & BD featuring an English dub from Bangzoom! Entertainment and extensive extras.

Extras included in the JP/TW release (from my post in the JP thread):

Quote:
On the bonus disc are the following features: Yamada Naoko in London (location/scenario scouting), Tanaka Minami's dubbing report (additional feature of the recording sessions), a backstage feature of Houkago Tea Time in Universal Studios Japan, a Houkago Tea Time in TBS press conference, a special program K-On! the movie navigational program, music recording, stage greetings on opening day, non-text OP/ED, pre-movie bit about manners, and TV CMs/previews/trailers.
Not going to bother with the physical extras since they're unlikely to be carried over.

I really really hope by "extensive extras" they mean everything ultimatemegax listed, just because I always really love the extras KyoAni puts out for their stuff.

Which reminds me that I still need to go through Bandai's extra disc for Disappearance.

You didn't carry over your earlier mention of the commentaries! Yeah, they're the extra that we're least-likely to get... ;_; In case ADV doesn't provide them, I wonder if any of the fansubs have any of the commentaries translated, but I rather doubt it (I don't know if I've ever seen it done, aside from Madoka).

I got my copy and it's mostly good. The translation is a little goofed up again. 30 minutes into the film when Yui suggests asking Muttan what Azunyan wants. In both the sub and dub scripts, it's been translated as Mud Stain. It's not a reason to not purchase, but it should be noted. Also, to my chagrin, they didn't translate Yui's shirts. Honorifics have disappeared, too. I'm going to review season 2 to make sure, but I believe season 2 kept in all the Mugi-chan and Mio-chan and the like. No translator was given credit for this movie. In retrospect, a translator that Sentai regularly contracts should have been put in charge of the subtitle script. Mini cultural notes could have been used to explain puns. More faithful tranlations of puns and words like Muttan could have been kept in the script.

Purchase this, by all means, because this movie is FUNNY! However, I advise finding a few fansub scripts and use those in addition to the subtitles.

Could I just watch it Japanese/unsubbed, or are subs locked to the Japanese track on this release?

After Kids on the Slope, Tokyo Magnitue and Penguindrum Sentai needs to stop half-assing their releases.... I'm not pre-ordering with those guys anymore!

Sorry, I can't answer if the blu ray subs are locked. I bought the dvd version, and didn't want to create multiple threads across multiple sections. I'm assuming both dvd and blu ray have the same subtitle script and dub audio soundtrack.

BTW, subtitles off is how I watch K-on! season 1 from Bandai.

I'm not blaming Sentai for this because of the possiblity TBS/Sakura High Band production committee insisted Bang Zoom must be used. I really would have liked to see Aimi Tokutake have a shot at K-on!. She did a good job on "And Yet The Town Moves", and I would have liked her to have the K-on! assignment.

Something had to be done since this isn't something that loses substance when translated. Well, I will still get the release, but I will hold off on it until I lighten my backlog.
