Default Air Thread II (was: Air movie contents and stuff)

As for the Movie-contents, what do you people think?

I like the bgm-usage and the vocal If Dreams Come True was aptly used.

The character-art was just awesome.

Misuzu's and Kanna were much much prettier. Especially Misuzu. The chibi-Misuzu was very cute.

Haruko's much more realistic. With vague nipples.

Yukito had a rounder face and more expressive eyes. Ryuya was more bishounen.

Minagi's a bit different and Kano's was a bit better-looking. Michiru, Hijiri, and Uraha were pretty much the same as the TV-versions, except in more vivid colors.

The story was a uniquely different take on the Summer and Air arcs. They incorporated the missing love-story angle quite well.

Misuzu was quite the aggressive girl, wasn't she? I really like that movie-characterization of her.

Kanna's much more reserved, vulnerable and not quite shy.

The movie-climax was ok, but it just wasn't quite as heartbreaking as the TV's climax masterpiece.

The animation was very smooth and the colors were very vivid.

The sunshine-effect was a bit distracting at first in the Kanna-scenes, but it's all good. But do note that these Kanna-scenes were glaringly bright and most likely intentionally so.

I really like the way they animated the ocean waves. Misuzu reading on the beach-edge was just quite picturesque.

Mod Edit: Changed the subject line to make it more clear that any Air discussion can go here, not just the movie contents.

I just got my copies of the special edition and the collector's edition today.

I'm very happy with both. The storyboard book is freaking huge. The storyboards themselves are a bit smaller/sketchier than I would have liked, but considering that they cover practically every frame of the entire movie, I guess it's a fair trade-off.

I'll post more thoughts on the content after I watch the movie again. My first impressions: A really stunningly beautiful film. Some of the changes from the series are good, some not-so-good, so it all more or less balances out. I love the unique directing style; I think people will definitely see Osamu Dezaki's touch in this, not that I'm an expert on him or anything.

Are the translucent box slipcovers meant to be kept/displayed?

It's just a glorified obi IMO. But I'm still keeping it.

I'm keeping it on as a scratch-guard for the box.

post the CE stuff, mang!

and while we're waiting, here are some snaps:

This seemed like a good place to cut things to make a new Air thread.

Hope no one minds.

I don't really like it, from the stand point of presentation. I really hate the frequent use of still images like Violinist of Hamln and countless old school anime. Then there's the magnifying lens sort of images, I don't know what's up with that, when they enlarge people's heads and make the body look small. Also, I don't think the available BGMs was used to its full effect.

And the animation, its just mediocre TV quality. The people's eyes, damn, those are terribly drawn.

[/ QUOTE ] I remember mag-effect being used on only three or four consecutive scene-frames. Quite cartoonish, but was prolly a sight-gag.

Also, I don't think the available BGMs was used to its full effect.

[/ QUOTE ] The Movie-BGM was subdued and didn't really have much selections like the TV-BGM. I found it better propagated in the 5.1-audio setting instead of the default PCM-setting, however.

[ QUOTE ]

[/ QUOTE ] hmmm. That's pretty interesting. What was mediocre about the Movie's animation again? I thought it was alot smoother, realistic and not pausey/stilty compared to any tv or ova animation in terms of movements and transitions from the characters and items within the scenes.

The background's colors/shadows/lighting-effects were both vivid and subdued at the same time and meshes/blends quite well with the character-art.

However, the director did kinda got carried away with the sunshine-effect in that it seems he really wanted to capture real-world summer-glare. That was distracting in the Kanna-scenes since it basically covered her up.

[ QUOTE ]
The people's eyes, damn, those are terribly drawn.

[/ QUOTE ] Eh? I guess I would have to disagree with this. The characters' eyes were noticeably different, quite rounder and more richer/livelier and were more expressive. Not quite like the generic big/flat Kanon-style doe-eyes like the TV-version had.

editted for clarity.

Just thought I'd chime in to say that I agree with pretty much everything treatment said, especially in regards to the animation. The TV animation was certainly excellent. However, the movie animation--while not on the level of, say, GitS: Innocence or anything Miyazaki--was a cut above.

An example of the bad animation and eyes that I'm talking about.

Er, how can you judge animation from a still image?
