Default AoD Advance Review: Daphne in the Brilliant Blue Vol. #4

Review

Reviewer: Chris Beveridge

[ QUOTE ]
In Summary:
Daphne in the Brilliant Blue is a series that still feels wildly uneven overall and very much something that is lacking in direction. We got some major hints as to what it could be in the last episode of the previous volume but then it's essentially ignored for another four episodes in this volume instead of being built upon. I like the way they added some new equipment to the group and worked the stories so that Maia is now likely to be much more confident in herself and others around her being confident in her as well but at the same time it does just feel like the show doesn't know where to go. It's fun and enjoyable and I'm really blasé about those uniforms now but it's missing that critical oomph to make it something that needs to be watched.

While the Old Man and the Sea episode was lame, I thought the other episodes were comedy gold. I love the behaviour of the idiotic brothers as they hold Maia hostage (AGAIN) and the behaviour of Rena's old flame. We'll see how Chris thinks of the last episodes which are poignant in nature though as we approach the last volumes.

The brothers were great, I really enjoyed that episode. The two parter was rather good as well since I think they did a good job of providing the tension and explaining away some of the basics of the world (that I still think we should have learned much earlier).

My only "problems" with the disc is that it was all seemingly setup just to get them the sub, which is fine but it was a bit forced, and that there still doesn't seem to be much gelling of the overall storyline since they practically dropped it from what they learned in episode 12. All we get is Rena occasionally calling Maia "memory loss girl" or something.

Let's just say that the dumb brothers and the sister will play a big role as we get to the ending. Ditto somewhat for Rena's old flame.
