Default Yugo... question about the girl in the 1st arc

Leylia (sp)... why doesnt she wear a veil?

also thought women in the ME tend to be covered from head to toe?

or is she from a different religious group or just the anime creators making her that way?

Before anyone shits themselves in fear, I'm discussing this stuff as it's relevant to the portrayal of the Pakistani girl in Yugo, Pakistan Arc.

Heh, that, and even veiling, vary *immensely* from country to country and even within countries from rural to urban or among various ethnic groups, and that applies to the Yugo girl as well. I was in Uzbekistan, which isn't a great example because of 70 years of Soviet rule, but it's still almost entirely Muslim, and the capital, Tashkent, looked pretty much like a western city (except for all the military everywhere ) while down in Bukhara (smaller, much more provincial and traditional), you saw much more of the covering in general.

So, it's not a monolithic thing at all, and the girl portrayed in Yugo may have just been of a different socio-economic or ethnic background where that's not as common. Granted, I only saw a few episodes and it's been quite a long time since I saw them, so many details that might help are lost from my memory. I also remember her being on her own apparently, and wasn't she dancing for a bunch of men? I could certainly see that having an impact as well. But on the other hand, it's also Pakistan which is one of the more conservative countries, although, again, that varied by where you are in the country. Holed up with militants, she probably wouldn't have gotten away with it for real

It's really hard to say for sure without it being fresh in my mind, but in the end I think you can chalk it up to "it's just anime" and be amazed that they created something even as accurate as it was, which isn't quite the norm when it comes to anime portraying foreigners

Also keep in mind, as was pointed out to me, she's a slave, sold off by her parents. I doubt anyone was very concerned for the purity of her soul.

Ah right, I knew there was something I was forgetting. That would certainly have an influence on it, to some extent.
