Default What are some of the key titles in Giant Robo History?

I know Viscerr and some of the other Giant Robot fans would know this. I know some of the Key titles that are part of a Giant Robot Panel. Eva, Raxepheon, Gundam (all of the series except SD Gundam), Godannar (For what is going on Today) and Eureka Seven (for what is happen soon). Giant Robot, Mazinkaiser and Tetsujin back in the 1960's are the key old school series. What are some other key Giant Robot titles that makes for a good panel? I have only an hour and I am doing this panel at Katsucon.

Heavy Metal L-Gaim - very big part of 80's robot anime fandom

AT Votoms - also big as well, and slightly underrated compared to Gundam

Mobile Police Patlabor

Getter Robo - there've been 6 or 7 Getter Robo titles. Very big in its own right.

Aura Battler Dunbine - good combo of Mech and fantasy elements. could talk about Escaflowne, Five Star Stories, Panzer World Galient, and L-Gaim on this basis too.

Also, talk about the Super Robot Wars video games which take mechs from many of these shows and have them go at it. Seems to be a pretty big staple among anime/game fans.

Mazinger Z - First piloted super robot (before this they were remote controlled like Tetsujin 28)

Getter Robo - First multi-pilot combining robot

Mobile Suit Gundam - Needs no note, if you're running a panel you should be well versed about the effect this series has on all anime made since. ("Oyaji ni mo butareta koto nai noni!" as Sasahara from Genshiken would say)

80's "real" robot series - Votoms, L-Gaim, Layzner, Z Gundam all showing mecha evolving directly influenced by MSG

Evangelion - Redefined robot shows (some people say it's not a real mecha series, what IS then, I ask?)

Modern stuff directly or indirectly influenced by Eva - Big O, Argent Soma, Rahxephon

That's probably more than enough right there (a whole hour could be commited to just about any one of those shows alone...). You could also mention "modern" Tomino (Brain Powered, Turn A Gundam, Overman King Gainer), which is nothing like his old stuff, but still great IMO.

The Trilogy needs mentioning perhaps.

Combattler V
Voltes V
Daimos

Perhaps in line with a SRW game feel Cybuster would be an interesting segway.

Nadesico would also be an excellent mention..as would the Gekiganger III aspect of it.

Otherwise, all that is left are short shots like Dangaizer III, Super Robot Wars Original Generation OVA, Steel Jeeg, Goshogun and the like.

Could also mention Space Runaway Ideon which, although was canceled, did have a direct influence when Gainax created the End of Evangelion movie.

Talk specifically about the creators of these works too. Go Nagai, Tomino, Kawamori, Nagano, Takahashi... these guys defined how to create good mecha entertainment.

It's a drama. Since when have mecha been organic in nature? While I agree that Eva is a show with Giant "Robots" in it. I wouldn't call it a Giant Robot anime.

I think you're a little mistaken about your "old school series." If by Giant Robot you mean Giant Robo, that was actually a live action series originally (not sure if you're adhering to just anime, or Japanese robots in general). Mazinger Z is the old school predecessor of Mazinkaiser (along with Great Mazinger and Grendizer). All three have had recent anime remakes, though, and I would include Getta Robo (or Shin Getta Robo) and Gaiking (not yet licensed here) if you're focusing on older robots that have had remakes.

Otherwise, yeah, everyone's made good suggestions. If pressed for just the most important, I'd go with:
Tetsujin 21 (the first)
for the earliest period

Mazinger Z (first piloted)
Getta Robo (first transforming/combining)
for the first of the varied 70's Super Robots

Mobile Suit Gundam 0079 (mecha as tools of war)
Superdimensional Fortress Macross (however you choose to pronounce it)
for the most influential of the 80's space opera/war sagas

Evangelion

Certainly there are many, many more (just go look at the Soul of Chogokin lineup). If including live action stuff, Battle Fever Robo was, I think, the first Sentai robot. Or should we include Spiderman's Leapordon? And while they might not fit into the traditional Japanese Giant Robot model, Transformers was pretty influential as well.
