Default The Science(?) of Ippo

I wasn't sure if this belongs here or in OT, but I was wondering - just how exaggerated are the boxing moves in Fighting Spirit (Hajime no Ippo)? Does anyone really use the hitman style, the smash, the corkscrew, etc.?

Not to mention, the amounts of damage they somehow manage to take and keep fighting. In particular on disk 7 where his opponent for the rookie champ was knocked unconscious by a blow to the temple, yet continued to pummel him through after the bell sounded (since he couldn't hear anything) and sit down in what looked like an alert stance. Has anything like that ever _really_ happened before? How realistic are the injuries in general?

I'm sure these are probably silly questions, but it seemed like Ippo's been good at showing the strategy behind beating the crap out of your opponent , including how to train and improvise for each individual match. I think it'd be interesting enough just seeing them do normal boxing while hearing everyone's thoughts and motives, but I understand you have to have a little extra awesomeness to please the fans.

Anyway, everything I know about boxing I learned from Ippo so I need an expert's opinion (maybe guyver83?). Thanks!

The hitman style was def not fake, as stated in the show Thomas the hit man hearns used it and the flicker jab. Ok it wasn't like the anime drew it out to be but he did use it alot to set up many of his punches. Yep teh dempsey roll is actually a real move however.. no fighter uses it now.

To be honest I've never seen a boxer use a corkscrew heart punch before. Ippo stance the peek a boo as in the anime Tyson used and it was damn effective with his power punches. Yeah some of the moves in Ippo are a bit over the top over many are legit ones and were used in the past.

The smash is fake as no boxer would use that type of like Sendo did, if he did, his ass would get flatten in a instant.

As you stated In vol 7 When Ippo railed Sendo and he got knocked out, I haven't read alot about boxers having that feeling. It prob could be true but most of the time in boxing if they can't make it to the next round its more the corner dec or the refs not like how Sendo lost.

I hope this helps you out a bit.

All I know is Ippo makes what is normally a very boring and repetitive sport entertaining. I can't stand real life boxing, but I love the crap out of Ippo.

NOTE! POSSIBLE VOLUME #7 SPOILERS (Not talking about anything specific, but it could be infered)

You've heard of football players who suffered a concussion and played the rest of the game but later didn't remember one bit of it, right? I think that was the same sort of thing in vol. 7.

But for other sports I can usually say I like the real life counterpart, but boxing is just one sport I could never get into.

But yeah, I guess you can't really be a sports anime/manga fan if you're a purist of the sport and can't stand anything that might exaggerate it. I'm usually pretty easy on these things. Hell I've sat through Prince of Tennis which exaggerates its sport more than any other that I've seen.

Heh, true, I'd forgotten they sometimes mention the history behind styles and moves. I guess a good rule of thumb is: ones given a historical background are real, while some character's secret move, like the champ's corkscrew heart punch (which may be possible in theory though) or Miyata's super-counterpunch are probably stretching the laws of physics or anatomy . Anyway, thanks for the quick reply, that was definitely informative.

And I have to agree, Ippo definitely makes boxing more enjoyable than I might find it otherwise. I always thought the asian martial arts were more interesting, but boxing seems to have much of its subtlety come in before the match itself. They certainly need their one month or more to prepare between each one!
