Default Only Yesterday on TCM Thursday 1/26

Just a reminder that Turner Classic Movies has been showing films from Studio Ghibli this month (in the US) and they are showing Only Yesterday - Omoide Poro Poro on this Thursday 1/26 at 8:00pm and again at 12:30am.

This is IMHO a terrific film. It actually is my favorite Ghibli film. And although as many people here already know, it is licensed by Disney in R1, but they may never release it, since it isn't a kids show, or an action/adventure story.

I was fortunate enough to see it on the big screen at the New York Museum of Modern Art this past summer, and it was a treat because this is a beautifully animated film.

For those of you who haven't heard of it, although it is a Ghibli film, it is not directed by Hayao Miayazki, but instead by his Ghibli partner, Isao Takahata, who also directed Grave of the Fireflies and My Neighbors the Yamadas.

If you are a fan of slice-of-life stories, and you haven't already seen it, you really should check this out.

It is being broadcast in the original Japanese with subtitles, which is a rarity in itself on American TV.

I'm looking forward to seeing this, especially after seeing it having a 4 star rating (assuming the listing in the newspaper's TV guide is correct). Hopefully it'll at least be as enjoyable as Whisper of the Heart, which I really liked last week.

So far, "Whisper of the Heart" is the best anime I've seen so far this year, I'm extremely excited to see this one.

For what it's worth, TCM has been showing all the other Ghiblis twice, once dubbed and once subbed. This is being shown subbed-only because there's no dub because there's no planned release yet. Which I sincerely hope changes soon, since it's an excellent movie, and one that I relate to even if the big target demographics might not .

Well on right side column of the TCM listing page here there is a link for their "home video vote" for people to vote for this title to be released on DVD.

As I write this, there are currently only 40 votes for Only Yesterday to be released on DVD. If you see the movie on Thursday, and you enjoy it, please try and revisit the page and vote.

Actually, anyone who would like to see this released in R1 should try and vote.

Who knows, it might actually help.

According to the TCM "Why Vote?" link:

"Because we'll routinely send your votes to major Home video distributors responsible for releasing classic movies on to DVD. So go ahead and vote and let your voice be heard!"

Thanks for everyone who has voted to support a R1 release for Only Yesterday so far, the count is up to 87 now.

If you haven't already voted, and you would like to see Only Yesterday released on DVD in R1, please do so in the right hand column of this page.

Also if you haven't seen this great (IMHO) film, check it out tonight, Thursday 1/26 at 8:00pm on TCM or if you miss it then, you could always DVR it when it is shown again at 12:30am.

Thaks for the heads up Nakidasu, I was aware of this TCM project, but I had not been following it since I have most of those shows on DVD already. I would not have wanted to miss this one! It did not disappoint me either. I was a bit confused at first with the jumping around but I caught up fairly quickly. Not really like the other Ghibli movies at all, so very nostalgic. And good music to match the moods. I hope they do get an R1 release someday. BTW, that vote is up to 159 now. We can only try.

Miyazaki films have been on TCM abunch lately. I watched Porco Rosso and a couple others about a week ago. Got my TIVO thing recording them all.

Anyways, I just voted. Something I don't own yet is ALL of the Miyazaki movies so I definitly hope this gets R1. Can't have a perfect anime collection without them.
