Hi All,
Just checked out the first 4 eps of "Samurai 7" and I have to say I'm enjoying it. Fight scenes aren't that great, IMHO, but it's a very solid, and intriguing series. For those that have seen the whole series: 1. How's the Ending? (Mild Spoilers OK) Is it satisfying? Does it go off some random tangent/get weird/stupid? (*cough*Eva*cough*) Or is it similar to the OG "Seven Samurai" Movie? (I've seen the OG movie, so it's no big spoiler if it was like that.) 2. How consistent is the animation and episodes throughout? Does it dip in quality (which some series unfortunately do)? Or is it pretty solid / consistent from what I saw in Episodes 1-4? Thanks for any help! |

I thought Samurai 7 was a solid series mate. I pretty much enjoyed every episode - obviously there are a few which are 'filler' types, but on the whole thoroughly enjoyable.
It's been a while since I watched it, but from what I remember it sticks 'fairly' closely to the themes from the Kurosawa movie up until about two thirds of the way through, where it has to go off on a bit of a tangent due to the extra things (other parties/themes) that the writers put into the overall story. I wasn't disappointed with the new additions they made. I thought it came to a good conclusion, and I don't remember being dissatisfied at the end of it all. It gets weird, but nothing on the scale of Eva. As far as animation is concerned, I seem to remember it being of consistent quality throughout... Although my brain is telling me that there were bits where the animation was repeated from previous episodes (an attempt to save on budget perhaps?). To give you a frame of reference, the animation in anime is the most important factor for me, and I don't remember being too annoyed about any dips in quality/repetition whilst I was watching it. It's good man, if you liked the first four, I'd advise you to stick it out. There are some really cool bits later on... Peace.

There is a part of episode 7 that looks really bad. The animation AND artwork are total crap. Have a look for yourself. 1, 2, 3, 4.
Things do pick up again later in the episode, though. From what I've heard this drop only occurs in this episode. I've seen up to disc 3 so far and the rest of it has looked as good as volume 1. |

Disc 4 also has great animation. So I think it was a one-episode thing.

While it does go down the same path as the live-action, this one felt more unsatisfying. The main character barely changes - he is still as immature in the end. Also, they kept hinting that this would lead into a satisfying romantic conclusion but alas it does not happen. Worse, the villagers seem like nothing more than ungrateful bastards at the end. Then there's the whole deal with the wife that ran off with the king that really irritated me. (I wish she'd die). I give the ending a D. 2. Yes the animation quality drops. Horribly. |

I could swear the animation on the whole drops after the first couple of episodes (especially the phenomenal first), but I could just be deluding myself. No doubt 7 is shit though.

Ah,
Wow, did that Episode 7 animation SUCK (sorry but those screens really show how bad it went I guess.) Thanks everyone for your input. Again, I've seen the original Kurosawa classic, and was just wondering how the anime version held up. |

The "bad" animation was on purpose, not just some lapse in the budget? |
