Its Adachi Mitsuru romance from 87 - 88. Is it as good as Miyuki, is the anime complete with its manga, unlike Miyuki?
Are the characters good & stories entertaining - humour & pathos?

It starts out fine, but gets really good around 1/3rd into the story (I could tell you the exact episode). The TV series is much more fleshed out than the manga and has a great ending. Great characters and stories, very funny and lots of romantic drama, joy and heartaches and blah. And the ops/endings are great, beautiful animation and the same kind of 80s ballads that make Miyuki and Maison Ikkoku so special. Don't delay, get it now. Seriously, I know I sound like a salesman when I say this, but if you liked Miyuki you'll love Hiatari Ryoukou. Oh, and I know you're a fan of Tsuru Hiromi. She plays one of the main characters, a very adorable role. As for the movie, it's not available at the moment so I have no idea... I hope it doesn't take too long for it to be released. But I'm happy with the TV ending.

About it getting really good around the 1/3 mark, it's true and you get a new OP (which I love ) to boot. If you have watched the Touch TV series, you will find Hiatari Ryoukou! carries over most of the character designs and voice actors /actresses from said show. Incidentally, Hiatari Ryoukou! followed after the broadcast of Touch ended. [ QUOTE ] Hunter Pfil said: As for the movie, it's not available at the moment so I have no idea... Taking into account that the Touch movies came out a few months after the DVD boxset, there is a good chance that the Hiatari Ryoukou! movie will come in a few months after the DVD boxset. |

*swallows hard* Sold!
CDJ or Yesasia? YA pays shipping & customs but its price is $70 (£42) more, CDJ has those on top, but has better shipping options. As its an expensive box set which is the better option? (Am.Jp. I don't use.)

Watching this show is giddily surreal in a way that Rumiko Takahashi shows (with their similar character designs) never were.

[/ QUOTE ] I've purchased enough DVDs from CD Japan over the years to pay for a new car, and I have never ever had a problem. Their EMS shipping is insured, and they package everything properly, so you should be safe if you go with that option. May I suggest that you also pick up the 'song book' CD? I'll be adding it to my next order. edit: YesAsia are reliable too, in my experience, although I'm not sure if they insure their packages. So you should be fine either way.

[/ QUOTE ] 'Kaette kita machikado' is my favorite of the Hiatari Ryoukou songs. Although I also like the last op/end combo, which sound like they're by the same singer who did the end theme on Mahoutsukaitai and some other older series (I need to dig up some info on that). [ QUOTE ] If you have watched the Touch TV series, you will find Hiatari Ryoukou! carries over most of the character designs and voice actors /actresses from said show. Incidentally, Hiatari Ryoukou! followed after the broadcast of Touch ended. [/ QUOTE ] Which is odd, because the video quality seems slightly worse than I remember Touch and Miyuki. For instance, there is some jittering throughout. (Nothing too distracting though, and there is a lot of life in the art and animation, so it didn't bother me at all.) [ QUOTE ] The ending is fairly clear cut in my books and I'm happy with it. [/ QUOTE ] <crosses fingers for the movie> I thought the ending was very powerful, even if it didn't resolve every single detail. Most anime endings don't do that anyway. (It's funny how (major spoiler) <span style='color:#dddddd;background:#dddddd'>the one relationship that was completely resolved in the manga (Keiko-chan and Ariyama) is one that goes completely unresolved here though.</span>)

Does it get done in the movie (from seeing it at a theatre or on LD
etc)? What manga volume please? BTW Miyuki has a music video & all creditless openings & endings on its final volume, (#10)

Since I haven't seen the movie I can't answer that question, but maybe someone else can. It's in the final volume of the manga. (IIRC. It's been like 5 years since I read the manga. Anyway, the TV series changes so many things from the manga, it's more like two different continuities.) [ QUOTE ] BTW Miyuki has a music video & all creditless openings & endings on its final volume, (#10) [/ QUOTE ] Yeah, those were great. Unfortunately, Hiatari Ryoukou only has one of the openings creditless, and no music videos. It's a shame, as the op/ed animation is really good and I wanted to see them all. I'm guessing they simply didn't have the necessary elements available, or they probably would have included them all.

My set & CD have arrived! 48 episodes of classic 80s school soap anime watching ahead, though I'll look for soem script translation of the anime & manga first.
Hitoshi Doi has a synopsis of the movie on his site.
