Poor old MVM. I've been experimenting with dipping my toes back in the UK market with Paranoia Agent because it had a box, but this is a major set back. I'm prepared to put up with a cut of a few seconds but this is over a minute, and its rated 18, which means that only adults can watch it.

If you want to keep the PAL formatting you could try importing the R4 release, which has these scenes in it I think. (Must check tonight when I get home.)

Have I accidently logged onto the Daily Mail forums?

I disagree with the cuts, but that's clearly an over reaction.

Wasnt meant to be serious, should have really added a smiley or something but AODforums dont have the raised eyebrow smiley which I would have used on MSN.

Sad to hear this about PA.

Since that episode was broadcast unedited on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim here I find it a bit confusing that the UK would have more stringent rules for a direct to DVD release. But then again, I am not as familiar with the BBFC's standards and practices compared to our MPAA (which this DVD did not have to go through).

Considering that (spoiler) right before the hanging scene we clearly see that the 2 adults are trying to prevent her from committing suicide by cutting her rope. And that the episode in question is a black comedy. you would think that your ratings board would take that into account than simply the isolated censor action by itself.

You shouldn't blame MVM though, to me it seems their hands are tied. I hope you support their releases none-the-less. But at least you have options (R-1 & R-4). No matter how you watch PA. I hope you get to enjoy the series.

Thanks for your support.

Sincerely,

Sorry, but it did follow quite a strongly worded rant, so even though I knew you weren't being serious, it read like a letter from Digusted of Tunbridge Wells.

Thanks for the reminder about the R4 release - might just do that.

And is the BBFC moving back into its old repressive ways? I think it is - I also think that there's no way their viewers will have watched the earlier episodes - all they'll have seen will be a weird and incomprehensible cartoon with a hanging scene.

Maybe I should have children - I might understand the fuss more.

These are the guys who passed Puni Puni Poemy uncut a little while ago (still trying to get over it ), I think it's just that someone was in a bad mood that day.

Default Same thing happened to Ren & Stimpy

I thought this reminded me of something else and then it came to me this morning; the same thing happened to Ren & Stimpy last month. And this is a show that was always broadcast on TV as well (which of course isn't policed by the BBFC).

[ QUOTE ]
To obtain this category cuts of 3m 2s were required. The cuts were Compulsory.
Cut required to remove a sequence in which the subject of hanging is presented as comedic, fun and risk free, on the grounds of potential harm to the likely audience and in accordance with the Video Recordings Act 1984.

[/ QUOTE ]

You can find a bit of discussion about this at DVD Times.

I do think it's an interesting comparison though, and to be honest the decision is probably for the same reason; because Paranoia Agent is a cartoon and so children "might" see the material regardless of classification.

Indeed, to some people a cartoon is a cartoon and they dont care about the rating.

I might even get both the UK vol 3 and the US or AUS one, just so i can see how the cut affects the scene. I know whatever i do ill continue to enjoy PA

There used to be a web page with an interview of a BBFC reviewer about Overfiend III. Unfortunately its gone now.

However the gist was that media whose primary audience is children, e.g. cartoons & video games, is graded & cut more severely than others intenbded for older more mature audiences.

The man questioned was shocked at what was done by & to children on Overfiend III, and moreso because it was in a cartoon. As we know huge hunks were hacked out of the UK release.

O/fiend is extreme, but not allowing certain weapons, like shuriken in video games is an example of their protective cuts. And of course the uproar about the sex easter egg in GTA3, an intended-for & adult cast game.

18 rated media can't be sold to minors, or bought by them. But like other "vices", its easy enough for children to see & use things they should not. The BBFC probably consider they are protecting children from exposure to scenes which might lead to mental &/or physical harm, in the event of our legal "system" failing.
