Tempted to pick these up. Already got the ADV uncut R1 release, and like most people, dis-satisfied with the quality of the footage on these releases. Just some questions -
1)Is there a substantial between these releases and the footage on the ADV releases? My basic plan is to simply rip the subs from my ADV DVD's and splice them with the presumably superior footage on the remastered ones. 2) Any box sets? Would be a mammoth thing to buy them all individual... might just get Sailor Stars. 3) Can anyone link me to the releases that are the remastered ones? CDJapan and YesAsia have various different releases, none of them specifically stating themselves to be remastered in the titles (might do in the description, my kana is lacking). 4) Any LE, SE, FP etc releases I should be aware of? Any other bits of info I should know are appriciated too Thanks! |

I only have season 1 on Japanese DVD. The audio difference is big.
Its much clearer. Comparing both, ADV's is like people talking through a scarf, to clear speech. I could tell the voice difference when Kae Araki stood in for Kotono Mitsuishi as Usagi/Moon on the R2Js, but not R1s. The R2s also have all previews & teasers in their proper places & for the correct episodes. Different, better recordings for opening & ending songs. Not much as extras, except the op & end's used for TV broadcast & LD release, which show how cleaned up the DVDs are. ADV's video was OK IMO, a little inferior in colour brightness, but clear otherwise. Both my R1 & R2 sets are deep-sixed out of harm's way. I'm glad ADV released BSSM uncut & subbed when they did - hope a better R1 release version comes in the future though.

This isn't very useful information, but the noncredit versions on the Japanese DVDs look liked used VHS source. Seriously. The noncredit versions on the R1s appear taken from the actual master tape, but the R2 noncredit versions have tons of grain and even analog dropout lines. What the hell?

It's OOP however, but they pop up on Yahoo Japan Auctions alot. There were artboxes released with the last volume of each season. They were limited first pressings though. They did the same thing with Cutey Honey Flash's clean OP/ED and Devilman's clean OP/ED (speaking of, the clean OP still had the lyrics) |

Cheers for the replies guys
The video on the R1's wasn't terrible, just left much to be desired. Frankly any alternative release with superior footage is something I'm interested in. The sound was really piss poor on the R1's though, and the quality, and even volume, wasn't consistant. Shame about the lack of a box set, perhaps I should just get Sailor Stars for now (since that's the only series I lack on DVD). I mean, if the video is only marginally better (as previous post suggests), it might not be worth the potentially large expense. Toei being mean to their home market!? What's worse is that the specials put on DVD (a Super S volume) seem like worn tape dumps as well, blurry grainy & faded by comparison to BSSM DVD TV episodes. (I've not watched "Ami's First Love" DVD yet which is on a separate DVD)

Definitely get Stars! Then look for a translation etc as there are meaningful dialogues between characters - more nearer the end.
Super S movie has "Ami's First Love" extra. And a Super S volume as the other TV specials, including a Uranus & Neptune story. Then you'll have it all, on one region or another. If you want to go budget, Stars can be bought on VCD from Yesasia.

Hm. I watched the SuperS specials on R2 and didn't notice a difference between them and the TV episodes.

I don't know if they were actually advertised as remastered. The video is definitely superior to the R1s (ADV or Geneon) but I think they just used better masters than the ones Toei gave to ADV and Geneon.
Now as far as buying it, it really depends on if you're willing to spend the price. All of Sailor Moon on R2 would be a very costly endeavor. It's probably worth buying Sailor Stars, seeing as that'll never make it over to R1 land, but the rest is on a case-by-case basis. I'd say if you wanted to buy another season, buy your favorite, or maybe the one that the video bothers you the most (original or R, likely). If you bought R, the bonus of that is you also get episode 67 which was left out of the R1 set. I personally own Sailor Stars on R2 but that's it.
