Default AoD Review: Planetes Vol. #5

[ QUOTE ]
In a lot of ways, Planetes has moved on as it has progressed and now feels quite different than it did back when it began, but it's no less enjoyable. There's a feeling now that things are beginning to fall apart for a number of characters – both emotionally and in their chances of seeing their dreams fulfilled, and the series is now definitely showing a darker side. With only one volume left, I'm really looking forward to seeing how events are finally resolved.

Full Review.

The volume in which Hachi goes from variably irritating to full-scale jerk. And the one in which I questioned Ai's I.Q. in still wanting him. But I started to respect her more as a person here. (Is it this vol or next she has bite ). Shame about Cheng Shin.

The corporate level sub plot is interesting, & reminded me lots of GiTS:SAC (not watched 2G yet)

Hachi's not a jerk, he just wants something so bad, and is unsure of how to get it, that he doesn't know how to factor people in to it. Not to mention he's not the best "people person" ever.

And as for Ai, well, love makes you do weird things. Why wouldn't she wait for Hachi?

Content grade for this volume should be an A, btw - I seem to have forgotten to fill that box in before sending Chris the review.. ^^;

I side on "jerk" - to me, his focus on his dream explains his behaviour, but doesn't excuse it. I liked the character up to this point, too, so it was difficult / disappointing to watch his change into someone who genuinely isn't nice.

As for Ai - she believes in the power of love, and has been pointing that out to anyone who'll listen from day one. She'll be convinced in her own mind that she'll be able to bring Hachi around just by standing by him, even if he doesn't want her there - I wouldn't expect anything less from her.

He's still a nice person deep down though, he just needs people around him to help him through the situation, but he isolates himself.

I don't know, maybe I've just seen this happen to people in real life so I'm more forgiving.

I've seen it in real life too. Hachi is really not fully mature emotionally (IMO). Planetes is a boy-to-man-right-of-passage story really.

In volume 5, though Hachi acts like a jerk. Anyway we'll discuss the ending & all after volume 6.

Now I need to order that manga...

He does act like a jerk at times in this volume, but I don't think he is overall.

Definitely! The manga is awesome, and different in some ways, but quite possibly even more awesome. It's wonderful, and quite frankly convinced me to buy anything from Makoto Yukimura.
