What are the differences between the two Region 1 releases?
The original and the special edition. Besides a newer transfer and mastering is there any content on the old version that is not on the special edition? I assume the special edition has more content as it being two discs... |

There is no old and new version with one or the other being superior. The series content is the same on the regular and LE releases.

Assuming that you're talking about the 2nd GIG series, the regular edition is just that - the regular version of the release. The special edition comes in a collector's tin and has special collector's items depending on which volume you purchased:
Vol. 1 - Tin and original CD Soundtrack Vol. 2 - Tin, Mouse Pad, and Playing Cards Vol. 3 - Tin and 2 Figures Vol. 4 - Tin and 2 Figures Vol. 5 - Tin, 2 DVDs (one with Dolby sound and one with DTS), and 2 Limited Edition Figures If you're talking about the movie, here's what's contained in the Special Edition: Disc One Features: Digitally Re-mastered Anamorphic Widescreen Feature, English 6.1 DTS-ES Surround, English 5.1 Dolby Digital-EX Surround, Japanese 6.1 DTS-ES Surround, Japanese 5.1 Dolby Digital-EX Surround, Spanish Dolby Digital Stereo, French Dolby Digital Stereo, Italian Dolby Digital Stereo, German Dolby Digital Stereo, English Subtitles. Disc Two Features: Character Dossiers, Creator Biography, Director Biography, Digital Works Production Report, Ghost in the Shell Trailers, Previews, DVD Catalog & Web Links. Hope this helps. Yeah Thanks ^_^
Problem I have is when I read both descriptions of both versions It looks like they changed the name of certain supplements. Guess it wouldn't hurt to just buy both as my old version dvd seams to have disappeared ~_~ |

That comparison is poor because it only compares features rather than video quality which is far more important.
The R2 and R3 copies of Ghost Shell are far superior to Manga's R1 releases. |
