Page 40 (Chapter 6) – The “White Skull” cigarettes return once again to replace the “American Spirit” that Dutch smokes. Page 101 (Chapter 9) – “SINGHA” beer is changed to “White Tiger Beer” generic. Pepsi logo billboard (written in Thai) replaced with Bold generic soda logo. Page 103 (Chapter 9) – White Tiger Beer again. Page 134 (Chapter 10) – Lucky Strike cigarette brand name edited off of cigarette pack. Page 142 (Chapter 11) – A lot more White Tiger Beer to replace SINGHA. Page 152 (Chapter 11) – Early Times whisky changed to Blue Ridge generic once again. Page 173 (Chapter 12) – Yet more White Tiger Beer. Page 175 (Chapter 12) – A little more White Tiger. Page 176 (Chapter 12) – Dutch’s beer of choice Budweiser returns and is replaced with the LionHeart generic again. And we have more White Tiger Beer. Page 183 (Chapter 12) – Kool-Aid drink mix changed to Cherry plus two other boxes in the same bag, one with a brand name change and the other with a logo edited out (don’t recognize what they were originally). Not as many edits as volume 1. They were a little too busy killing Nazis and being killed by creepy children to indulge so much in the finer things in life. And once again, all of the blood, boobs, and bad words were kept in tact. These brand edits were the only difference I saw. Except for one thing: When the twins are singing their creepy little song about being killed by their mother and being eaten by their father (page 167), it was a little different. It seems like the original Japanese version may have had a mistranslation of the original source material, or the people at Viz just thought it was a mistranslation of an excerpt from "The Juniper-Tree" by the Brothers Grimm and it was really meant to be something else. I'm not sure. |

Wow what a list. I don't remember even reading the first one.
I guess it would cost Viz a bomb to license all the brand usage, although what about in Japan? |

But one thing about the Viz edits, at least they are consistent with what they change bands to. They pick a generic for a brand that's used often and replace it with that every time: Pepsi = Bold Budweiser = LionHeart Early Times = Blue Ridge American Spirit = White Skull etc. etc. It'd have been extra annoying if they randomly changed them to different generics every time. |

EDIT: Also, a question: is Gyo totally safe to go out and buy? I'm doing a manga haul and I want to pick up the 2nd editions of Gyo (and damn do I want to get the Black Lagoon manga, but I might just wait until the current 8 volumes are out). Last edited by Danime : 10-22-2008 at 01:09 PM. |

Re: GYO - I highly doubt there is anything edited in the new editions. There was nothing to edit in the OLD ones.

That's good news for Gyo, I couldn't remember the name of that other series from Ito that has 2nd editions at the same time, found that it was Uzumaki, and I'll get that as well because I'm pretty sure Viz will have treated it the same as Gyo, and forum searches don't turn up any editing discussions on it (couldn't search for Gyo unfortunately because of the more than 3 letter word search rule). I really hope Viz release a boxset for Monster when volume 18 comes out too! EDIT: I see Uzumaki 1st edition was flipped but the 2nd edition is right-to-left again, which is fantastic! And no problems with Gyo there either. It wouldn't have been nice to get burnt by these releases ala Tekkonkinkreet. EDIT 2: (I don't know why I'm posting this here, but anyway) So my Viz orders now are Zombie Power 1-4, which as far as I can tell is unedited content wise, except one of the covers was changed the from Japanese version, which isn't a major problem. And I'm removing Black Lagoon 1-3 (to wait and see if any subsequent volumes are censored), and Death Note hardcover version, because I don't know if those will just be a one-off for volume 1, I'll get the Death note manga boxset after I watch the anime I think. I'm adding the Bleach and One Piece artbooks though, and the first volume of Bleach in hardcover, because it's uncensored, and the Vagabond VizBigs, because they're awesome. I'll wait to see if any reprintings of the Rurouni Kenshin VizBigs will add the missing colour pages before I buy them, and if they don't I'll just cut my losses and buy them because I loved the Kenshin OVAs and want to read this story and the likelihood of them being released in full colour anytime soon is doubtful. EDIT 3: Because I absolutely adore Yen Press, their ethics, and most importantly (actually equally importantly) their titles (Square Enix + more FTW), I'm going to pump all that left over money straight into the majority of Yen Press' titles, it's ever so exciting! It really is incredibly exciting buying manga from a publisher like Yen Press, I just hope they don't let me down after I invest so much in them. Last edited by Danime : 10-22-2008 at 03:02 PM. |

So why can some SJ fan-art have Zoro on a cross, but Viz can't keep a similar image for FMA?

Well, they won't put up dirty fan-art, if you catch my drift.
