I really hope the only updating this thread needs is to say volume "x" has been fixed in a second edition, if and when that ever happens.
I don't intend to micromanage discussions around here, but please, let's not stir the pot here. You're right that things have calmed down in the last couple of years, but I don't think we don't need to continue talking about a subject that only brings out the worst in people when nothing is happening.
I honestly didn't think anyone could take this the wrong way, every single part of it is meant in the best possible way. Anyway, I understand what you're getting at (took a bit of time to get my head around though). I didn't really have anything to reply to here, I just thought I needed to say something in response...

There weren't any edits for violence, sex, or language, but there was a long list of edits for copyright reasons. US copyright laws seem really silly to me in regards to stuff like this (like the whole Code Geass Pizza Hut thing). Edits include changing or editing out the names of popular brands of beer, cigarettes, soda, guns, and a few other things. Here's a full(?) page by page list of the edits in volume one that I found:

Page 22 (Chapter 0) – Bottle of Early Times whisky changed to “Blue Ridge” generic. But strangely enough, there was nothing wrong with Rock and Revy asking for Bacardi on page 25.
Page 61 (Chapter 0) – Can of Budweiser changed to “LionHeart” generic. “King Of The Surf Guitar: The Best Of Dick Dale & His Del-Tones” CD changed to generic “SURF ROCK” title.
Page 67 (Chapter 0) – Budweiser again. But the Stephen King book stayed in the page.
Page 69 (Chapter 0) – Yet more Budweiser.
Page 70 (Chapter 0) – Pack of American Spirit cigarettes changed to “White Skull” generic.
Page 80 (Chapter 1) – American Spirit again. Lake-something beer Benny is drinking, name edited out.
Page 81 (Chapter 1) – Jack Daniel’s, Zenith, and Dickies signs edited off of a building.
Page 84 (Chapter 1) – Chrysler name edited off of car.
Page 114 (Chapter 1) – maiaysia signs edited off of building.
Page 115 (Chapter 1) – Those cigarettes again.
Page 116 (Chapter 1) – Coors, Jack Daniel’s, Budweiser, and VO5 signs edited out/changed on the building.
Page 118 (Chapter 2) – Häagen-Dazs ice cream name edited out.
Page 124 (Chapter 2) – The Budweiser again.
Page 131-134 (Chapter 2) – Can of Pepsi changed to “Bold” generic. In the original Japanese version, Revy asked for Pepsi by name on page 131 instead of just asking for a cola.
Page 137 (Chapter 2) – Pepsi again.
Page 148 (Chapter 3) – Handgun brand edited out. Can’t tell what it was originally since I’m not very familiar with guns. Looks like they missed the edit on page 149, or it’s so unreadable that it doesn’t matter.
Page 154 (Chapter 3) – Gun brand edit.
Page 174 (Chapter 4) – Gun brand edit.
Page 182 (Chapter 4) – Gun brand edit.

Other than that little bit of slightly annoying sillyness, I am very satisfied with the English edition so far and will continue to buy it even though I've already bought up through volume 8 in Japanese.
I read my copy of Black Lagoon 002 from Viz today and compared it with my Japanese volume again. Here are my findings:

Page 40 (Chapter 6) – The “White Skull” cigarettes return once again to replace the “American Spirit” that Dutch smokes.
Page 101 (Chapter 9) – “SINGHA” beer is changed to “White Tiger Beer” generic. Pepsi logo billboard (written in Thai) replaced with Bold generic soda logo.
Page 103 (Chapter 9) – White Tiger Beer again.
Page 134 (Chapter 10) – Lucky Strike cigarette brand name edited off of cigarette pack.
Page 142 (Chapter 11) – A lot more White Tiger Beer to replace SINGHA.
Page 152 (Chapter 11) – Early Times whisky changed to Blue Ridge generic once again.
Page 173 (Chapter 12) – Yet more White Tiger Beer.
Page 175 (Chapter 12) – A little more White Tiger.
Page 176 (Chapter 12) – Dutch’s beer of choice Budweiser returns and is replaced with the LionHeart generic again. And we have more White Tiger Beer.
Page 183 (Chapter 12) – Kool-Aid drink mix changed to Cherry plus two other boxes in the same bag, one with a brand name change and the other with a logo edited out (don’t recognize what they were originally).

Not as many edits as volume 1. They were a little too busy killing Nazis and being killed by creepy children to indulge so much in the finer things in life. And once again, all of the blood, boobs, and bad words were kept in tact. These brand edits were the only difference I saw. Except for one thing: When the twins are singing their creepy little song about being killed by their mother and being eaten by their father (page 167), it was a little different. It seems like the original Japanese version may have had a mistranslation of the original source material, or the people at Viz just thought it was a mistranslation of an excerpt from "The Juniper-Tree" by the Brothers Grimm and it was really meant to be something else. I'm not sure.

Wow what a list. I don't remember even reading the first one.

I guess it would cost Viz a bomb to license all the brand usage, although what about in Japan?

My only guess is that copyright laws probably work a little differently in Japan, or maybe the trademarks aren't registered internationally? Not sure.

But one thing about the Viz edits, at least they are consistent with what they change bands to. They pick a generic for a brand that's used often and replace it with that every time:

Pepsi = Bold
Budweiser = LionHeart
Early Times = Blue Ridge
American Spirit = White Skull
etc. etc.

It'd have been extra annoying if they randomly changed them to different generics every time.

Since when did this happen? This is terrible news! I bought the wooden boxset back at Christmas 2007, I wonder if it contains these new edits. I guess there's no way to know whether or not you have a new printing either, seeing as it's not technically a new edition, unless a new edition is what the author of this thread means. My idea of ever having an uncensored version of Naruto released in English is never going to come true at this rate.

EDIT: Also, a question: is Gyo totally safe to go out and buy? I'm doing a manga haul and I want to pick up the 2nd editions of Gyo (and damn do I want to get the Black Lagoon manga, but I might just wait until the current 8 volumes are out).

These updated reprints were some time ago; it's probably safe to say anything coming out at this point would be suspect if it was one of those gone back and changed. It is worth noting some changes in the magazine are undone for the GN releases. I'll be honest here: I stopped paying attention. It's Naruto, the new big thing, and that's just the way it's going to be.

Re: GYO - I highly doubt there is anything edited in the new editions. There was nothing to edit in the OLD ones.

Re: GYO - I highly doubt there is anything edited in the new editions. There was nothing to edit in the OLD ones.
Thanks for the information, I don't quite know what I was thinking when I bought that Naruto boxset, it was such a tease product, and right next to Christmas as well, now I'm stuck with it... at least it's pretty.

That's good news for Gyo, I couldn't remember the name of that other series from Ito that has 2nd editions at the same time, found that it was Uzumaki, and I'll get that as well because I'm pretty sure Viz will have treated it the same as Gyo, and forum searches don't turn up any editing discussions on it (couldn't search for Gyo unfortunately because of the more than 3 letter word search rule). I really hope Viz release a boxset for Monster when volume 18 comes out too!

EDIT: I see Uzumaki 1st edition was flipped but the 2nd edition is right-to-left again, which is fantastic! And no problems with Gyo there either. It wouldn't have been nice to get burnt by these releases ala Tekkonkinkreet.

EDIT 2: (I don't know why I'm posting this here, but anyway) So my Viz orders now are Zombie Power 1-4, which as far as I can tell is unedited content wise, except one of the covers was changed the from Japanese version, which isn't a major problem. And I'm removing Black Lagoon 1-3 (to wait and see if any subsequent volumes are censored), and Death Note hardcover version, because I don't know if those will just be a one-off for volume 1, I'll get the Death note manga boxset after I watch the anime I think. I'm adding the Bleach and One Piece artbooks though, and the first volume of Bleach in hardcover, because it's uncensored, and the Vagabond VizBigs, because they're awesome. I'll wait to see if any reprintings of the Rurouni Kenshin VizBigs will add the missing colour pages before I buy them, and if they don't I'll just cut my losses and buy them because I loved the Kenshin OVAs and want to read this story and the likelihood of them being released in full colour anytime soon is doubtful.

EDIT 3: Because I absolutely adore Yen Press, their ethics, and most importantly (actually equally importantly) their titles (Square Enix + more FTW), I'm going to pump all that left over money straight into the majority of Yen Press' titles, it's ever so exciting! It really is incredibly exciting buying manga from a publisher like Yen Press, I just hope they don't let me down after I invest so much in them.

So why can some SJ fan-art have Zoro on a cross, but Viz can't keep a similar image for FMA?

Well, they won't put up dirty fan-art, if you catch my drift.
