Default Onegai Twins

Onegai Twins was something that caught me by surprise as I didn't see it in the new comic release sheet. As I'm sucker for the franchise, I picked it up without hesitation (as an aside I'm ashamed to admit I also picked up the Onegai Teacher novelization..can't remember if I ever bought the Onegai Twins novell..)

This release is by DrMaster. I find their titles and production standards to be second rate so I wasn't expecting too much from this release. It's shorter then your typical Viz/DR/TP release...even shorter than DH's OMG re-release. The cover has a nice full colour shot of Maiku, Karen, and Miina, while the back has a shot of the supporting cast. There's one thin glossy full colour page for the contents, with the rest of the book done in the typical paper pulp used by publishing companies. It's not the best, but it's not horrible either.

The artist is Akikan who takes on the job of interpreting Please!'s anime. The characters are a pretty good re-creation of the anime (unlike the badly done Eva comedy currently out). Clocking in at 218 pages (with 8 pages of omake at the end), the story quickly introduces us to Maiku and his new housemates Miina and Karen. The twist is one of them is Maiku's twin sister as they each have the same eye colour (blue which is apparently quite rare) and they all hold the same photo of two very young siblings - a boy and a girl.

The end is similar to the anime, however the way they reach that conclusion is slightly different. The same angsts over Miina and Karen's growing attraction to Maiku is present, as is the hijinks of Matagu chasing after his sister, Shimazaki's overt attraction(?) to Maiku, and the Student Council President spying on everyone's actions.

Overall it was a fun, light read but it's not something I would rush out to buy. As a one-shot it moves far too quickly for my tastes and the mystery over who is really Maiku's sister could have easily been drawn out longer. On the other hand the art is quite good, the translations seems ok, and it seems some effort was placed into this release as even the SFX is translated (a small translation along side the kanji like how DH does it). What I also found neat was that unlike their mainstream competition, there are no ads in this book (which means you don't have 5 pages of ads at the back or annoying inserts that fall out and nearly poke someone's eye out while laying back reading. but i digress).

So I give it 7/10 because I'm a sucker for this series and because DrM seemed to have done a pretty good job with bringing this to the N.A market.

edit: also forgot to mention that there are 3 panels of nudity (exposed nipples in a bath scene). in this day and age i find that truly remarkable and DrMaster should be applauded for not giving into censorship like the competition.

I enjoyed this too. I think 7 out of 10 is a fair assessment. It was good, but not great. A condensation of the TV series that's perfect for fans and completists like myself. I was worried about 13 episodes worth of material getting crunched down into a single volume, but they actually managed to pull it off fairly well.

Ah, Excellent.

There was a hole on my shelf caused by having the Onegai Teacher manga, and no corresponding Twins manga, so at least this gives me an excuse to run to Borders and grab a copy.

well its nothing pornographic or overtly detailed. just their nude bodies with grey shading to portray nipples (and of course the lower bit is covered by their legs). also keep in mind their age (15?) so .. yeah.

i imagine the competition would have drawn in steam

I finally got this. I must say that compared to the Onegai Teacher manga, this was somewhat of a disappoinment. While Onegai Techer's manga did a better job of making the characters more likable compared to the anime, the characters here in Onegai Twins were just as annoying as in the anime. The romance here fails because I just didn't give a damn who got together with who. Maiku is too unlikable (what kind of straight guy grumbles when two hot girls move in with him? ) and Miina and Karen act too much like idiotic bimbos. Karen's constant "Squeee!" got a little irritating. And I disliked Tsubaki just here as much as I did in the anime version. The one thing that thankfully was omitted from the whole manga was the whole Tsubaki x Kosei thing which was one of the incredibly idiotic low points of the anime. Probably the only thing that saved the manga was the fanservice.

I just read the Onegai Teacher and Onegai Twins manga over the weekend. I actually liked Onegai Twins more, though I thought the ending was a bit rushed. I haven't seen the anime of either one or else that might have influenced my opinion. I didn't think the first third of Onegai Teacher #1 was very good, butit got better as it went along. I found Onegai Twins to be more consistent, though the 'squee' was a bit annoying.

I was surprised to see it too. The copyright page says it was printed July 2006.

I purchased it from the Dr. Master booth at Wizard World on August 5th and the Dr. Master representative said that it had just been printed, but wasn't released yet. I don't think it was released to comic shops until September, though.

I bought my copy through my comic shop sometime in late August/early September. Can't remember which, but it was around that time period. It was running late from when it was initially solicited in Diamond's Previews catalog by about a month or two. Same with some of DM's other titles like Iron Wok Jan and the RahXephon novels...
