1. How knowledgeable do you have to be about Inu Yasha to understand each of the movies?
2. How do the movies tie in to the series, and do they spoil alot if you haven't seen the series?

As someone who has not seen the entire series, only chunks of it and not necessarily in order, I was able to follow the first 3 movies just fine knowing the characters. I haven't yet watched the 4th movie, but I imagine I'll be able to follow it just fine as well. As I understand it, all the movies are side stories.

Can't help with Q1 but the only thing the movies might spoil is some of the techniques that Inu Yasha learns to do with the Tetsusaiga. Oh and I suppose it spoils by showing who is in the main group of characters.
All of the movies function as stand alone stories that don't really tie into the series in any significant way. The only way to guess at where the movies fit into the storyline is by what techniques Inu Yasha does and does not have.

Ah thanks Do the movies adapt stories from the manga at all or are they original?

You don't really need to know anything. The movie plots are all standalone. If you have a passing knowledge of the good guys (Inuyasha, Kagome, Shippou, Sango, and Miroku), you'll be good to go.
It's really only the second movie that gets involved with the main vilian of the series, Naraku.

If you try to watch movie 3 you might want to try to rea da bit about Sessohmaru and his involement in the sotry and relationship with InuYasha since the entire movie revolves around those two and thier conflict.

You can pretty much follow the movies with maybe one season's worth of episodes watched. This is just to get to know how the characters got together and their purpose in their journey. Most of the main characters are introduced in the first season, except for Rin who is introduced in the second season. And as someone has already mentioned, the movies only spoil the moves Inuyasha learned with his sword.

[/ QUOTE ] This is true... for example, the first movie fits in perfectly by watching it after the second season box set. The abilities Inu Yasha learns by the last episode of the second set are used in the first movie.
