I'm trying to decide between buying ADV's release of Macross or trying to track down the old Animeigo discs. I'd be grateful for any advice as to which one is the superior release, especially in terms of picture/sound quality, subtitles, and extras.

I don't have links to the proof, but I'm sure someone does. Animeigo has better video quality (I might be remembering wrong and it has better audio quality, and if so, sorry for the misinformation). They have the same liner notes but I assume ADV has better on-DVD extras. The ADV selling point is the dub, but from your post I assume you don't consider that to be too important.
I am happy with my Animeigo boxes.

The AnimEigo version seems to have better audio/video quality but this may depend on your setup and how picky you might be. If A/V quality is your number 1 priority then the AnimEigo version is your choice. Keep in mind however that Macross TV is an ancient 80's anime - so the video quality can only go so far. The AnimEigo version is also nice in that it comes pretty cheap (provided you can find it) and complete (in the form of one big box or 3 mini-boxes). The ADV release is still on-going and you have to buy each of the 7 volumes separately (a box to hold all the volumes comes with Vol #1) . The advantages of the ADV version includes the English dub, fixes to some of the odd translation used in AnimEigo's subtitles, more extras, and artwork for the packaging. Personally I'd take the ADV version but I already have the AnimEigo box set.

depends on what you want.
i have both robotech and macross so i skipped on adv's macross. to me the robotech cast is too ingrained in my head for the english dub. even thou its not 100% translation of macross... its close enough. adv's version is interlaced, while animeigo is progressive. its mac-cross or ma-cross one day if they do a thinpak with all the extras included, i may pick up the adv version. probably wont till its on the next gen format thou, since if i can avoid interlace i would and i can with animeigo's version. |

Animeigo + ADV volume 1 is what I own & I'm happy. Only the AE ep.5(?) "trekkism" really irks me, & ADV's episode is what I watch to get past it.
Otherwise, its AE as they pioneered bringing MX to R1. Harmony Gold sell the AE set from their site in a better box than ADV, having the classic picture by Mikimoto of Hikaru & Misa on 1 side. Not boring black, not staple mecha, but character designer's art!

The only thing that ADV did was the english dub. Using this info, I would think that the video quality would be exactly the same. Danny |

Danny [/ QUOTE ] ADV did indeed use the restored master created by AnimEigo. The difference came in the encoding process. Still, the difference is either negligible or humongous depending on your setup and pickiness.

[/ QUOTE ] If you end up ordering the Animego version then you should get it from Rightstuff with the free shipping. I just got my shipping confirmation for mine. They have all three boxsets for $39.99 each. They have 2 copies of set 1, 4 left of set 2 and 6 copies left of the 3rd set remaining. |
