Aaaaanyway, I should say I enjoyed reading your thorough post, slerch, even though I know little about the show. Also glad to hear your epic saga with Hakusho has drawn to a close. It was also interesting to see the comparisons. The R1's seem to keep pace for the most part, but are a step or two behind in a few scenes. Most screencap comparisons I come by are used to show exteme differences in R1/R2 releases, usually in picture restoration (Outlaw Star for a recent example) and/or masters (Fumoffu). It was cool to get an idea on how a R1 compares to its Japanese counterpart when the video source is the same.

I went all out for this release because I thoroughly enjoy the show. I generally don't bother because it doesn't always seem to be well received or appreciated. I didn't care this time.

Usually you don't see comparison shots because generally the only reason people do them IS to show how great a difference there is between the versions (otherwise, why bother?). I know people are really hard on FUNi video quality, with due cause (speaking from my personal experience with FMA and others), so I tried to grab what I thought was a good cross section of scenes to give a feel for how it looks. I honestly see little wrong with the R1 video quality, though when using Pycola's method I can see differences though. Everyone's different though.

Glad you liked the post. One day I may do it again. I'm not going to bother posting like this again with vol. 2 though. I may point out if there are wrong openings, but that's about it.

Why? Because you get a better music experience by leaving stereo tracks alone than upmixing them if you don't have multitracks. What they've done with the earlier releases is actually a big no-no IMO - I'd probably have mentioned this before if it weren't for the fact that I don't listen to dubs so it's never been something I've really thought seriously about. I have mentioned it for earlier releases when it's been done for entire shows, like the evangelion movies and the Iria re-release.

In a way there is no missing channel, only added channels in the episode itself. It's kind of a glass is half full/half empty problem.

Honestly, the credits don't matter as much as the show does. As long as they have the op/ed is fine by me, it doesn't matter to be whether or not the credits are set up like Bandai who have the translated credits run at the end of the volume after everything plays or like ADV where they are translated and include both Japanese and English info (Something I found odd regarding Full Metal Panic was that some episodes had the regular ADV style credits and then some were left untranslated and ADV had a translated credit scroll after the episodes) or even FUNimations alt angle.

As for Geneon, they used to do (and sometimes still do), place all the voice actors in one block w/o regard as to who played who, I find that annoying.

There either were no creditless versions available or, if I remember correctly, they were one off type endings, so it was probably less work to leave it be.

the ending credits are weird... for the 1st ep when you switch back and forth between the angles you dont see any difference but the text. episode 2 had no "ending credits", the episode ran straight thru with the credits fading in and out... again only difference is the text from japanese to english when you switch angles.

however as of episode 3 to 5... the image on the credit scroll is the same as episode 1... however the english angle is more zoomed in than the jp version. it seems as of episode 3 the jp image used is pulled back farther, while the us image uses the same starting point as episode 1.

maybe funi wasnt given a clean version of the credit scroll from episode 3 on, since the image is basically the same, only difference is the zoomed in difference.

as for the openings... i tried switching back and forth in episode 4 and 5 and couldnt see any difference during the angle changes.

wish funi used the image of hazuki posing on the castle roof as a wallpaper. need to learn how to capture some decent images from the dvd for wallpapers.

There are creditless versions of all the op/ed on the R2 DVDs. Whether they were furnished or not or whether FUNi realized there was a difference could be the issue.

Go to the scene where the "cards" appear. You know, where on the first eps Hazuki has the gun which is just before (or is it just after?) where Kouhei "breaks" his finger on the tennis ball. Go to the "card" scene and swap angles. You'll see where they messed up on the English angle. That's the easiest place to spot the differences in the openings. Some of the other things, like the turtle with the eggs, change from opening to opening.

Rip the VOB to your PC then use VirtualDubMod to do a "capture from source."

If you have a retail version of just about any DVD viewing software, not something that comes bundled with your PC or DVD-ROM, you should also have a capture function. Check in the help menus to see if it exists in the software you have.

Be interesting if the R3 Tsukuyomi have creditless versions.

As JSMall is having a sale, I might buy one of them. Not tried any Mighty label releases yet.
