Hmm, assuming that the kid is a brat and doesn't have some serious issue causing his behavioural problems (I noticed several comments at that article crying "ADHD"), good for her, one less kid being a brat. Too many people here let their kids run wild without taking responsibility for their actions these days. This may not have been the best way to issue punishment, but at the very least it should have scared the crap out of him and it's better than nothing. And it should definetly teach him a thing or two about what happens to people who steal....

I don't know. I think she went a bit far. Hasn't anyone ever heard of just returning the toy to the store and giving the kid nothing for Christmas?

The kid's mother and/or grandmother or whoever should've been arrested for getting him a GBA and not a DS.

I can't judge too harshly cause i don't have kids of my own yet. However I work in a Home Depot and I see way too many children grossly misbehaving all the time. All I can think about when I see the stuff I see at work is: "If I did that when I was their age I would have been punished for it." It really makes me wonder what kind of generation is being raised right now. Such a huge lack of disipline that I'm seeing and this whole attitude of "It's not your fault you stuck a fork in a plug and got electrocuted. Sue the maker of the fork. It's their fault...somehow"

I just can't help but to think that that is kind of a harsh punishment for an early opening, but to each their own, I guess.

As for the story in question. To be honest I think my main problem is involving the police in such a matter. The police should be reserved for actual emergencies. The parent(s) should rely on themselves for punishment and yes the kid should be punished in some form.

At first, upon reading this, my initial thought was "Whoah, crazy parent." Then after reading further and seeing what the child had done BEFOREHAND, it seemed more understandable. Fine, mother, harsh punishment. Albeit, calling the police IS kind of extreme, but if you're at the end of your rope, fine.
Really, it's the police who are crazy for even going along with any of this. I mean, you'd think they'd hear this mother on the phone, pause, than laugh hysterically. In normal life, this is not something you call in the police for. Quote:
