The pictoral history of gaming got me thinking of all the greats from years past, and got me comparing the classics from my childhood with the games of today.
Are the favorites from yesteryear still the best? Do they pale before today's fare? And what about the consoles themselves? So what are your 10 favorite games of all time? What are your 2 favorite games from each console generation? (Let's make it interesting and exclude the games from your top 10.) And here's a poll for consoles themselves:

Point of order: NES, Bastard System, and those were actually Generation 3; SNES, Genesis were Gen 4; PSX, N64, Saturn were Gen 5; and PS2, Xbox, GCN were Gen 6. Having said that, I chose
• NES (favorites: Dragon Warrior 3; Super Mario Bros 3) • SNES (favorites: Super Mario Kart; Super Mario RPG) • PSX (favorites: Final Fantasy VII; Final Fantasy Tactics) • GCN (favorite: Paper Mario 2) and the best of them was the SNES. Somebody needs to fix the punctuation in the subject fields, man. It never took five characters to generate an apostrophe in the UBB days.

Man, why are my polls all in the wrong order? That's not how I entered them.
Ok, my own choices! 10 favorite games: 1. Xenogears (PS1) 2. Super Mario Brothers (NES) 3. Sonic Adventure (DC) 4. Front Mission 3 (PS1) 5. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (Genesis) 6. Sword of the Berserk: Gut's Rage (DC) 7. TMNT 2 - The Arcade Game (NES) 8. Splatterhouse (TG-16) 9. Bust-A-Move 3 (Saturn) 10. Custom Robo (GC) Aaargh! So many other greats!! Castlevania: SOTN, Virtual ON, Suikoden, Ducktales, Dr Mario, Joust, Kickle Cubicle, Dig Dug... the list goes on and on. Probably half the games would be different if I asked me again tomorrow. Favorite console ever: Sega Dreamcast Favorites in order of generation + 2 favorite games (excluding the ones in my top 10): Gen 1: NES (Choplifter (SMS), Skate or Die 2 (NES)) Gen 2: TG-16 (Lost Vikings (Genesis), Sidearms (TG-16)) Gen 3: Saturn (Castlevania: SOTN (PS1), Virtual On (Saturn)) Gen 4: Dreamcast (Donkey Kong: Jungle Beat (GC), Wacky Races (DC))

Gen 1 - NES
Gen 2 - SNES Gen 3 - Playstation Gen 4 - Dreamcast All-time fave? SNES. Out of each console I owned, SNES had some of the best video games ever. In particular, my favorite game for the SNES was Mega Man X2; I could play it for hours on end again and again and never get bored. For the NES, nothing could beat Super Mario Bros. 3. On Playstation, Metal Gear Solid was the most innovative game for it's time. As for the Dreamcast, there's so many excellent titles for that console it's VERY hard to say which was the best. IMO, Shenmue comes the closest.

I essentially stopped playing console games very early in the Dreamcast period. Maybe a couple months after it came out.
Favorite system is, bar none, the SNES.

For the single generation favorites, I didn't have to think at all. NES was the best generation 1 system (though I like very few NES games), SNES was the best of the next gen, PS1 was clearly the best after that, and PS2 was clearly the best in this last gen. Favorite system ever though? That's a hard question. In the end, I went with the Playstation 1. I've got far more great games for the PS2 than I do for the PS1, but the PS1 had more games that were just... legendary. It had some of the best Final Fantasy games we've seen, Xenogears, Chrono Cross, Metal Gear Solid, Castlevania: SOTN -- these were among the best games I've ever played so I had to give the nod to the system. The SNES was an amazing system, but I felt as though the PS1's best games were better than the SNES' best games overall.

Top 10 Favorites of All Time
Had a hard time with this one, since I've played lots of games I like, but wouldn't call a favorite. These are in no particular order:
For the favorites by generation, it was also hard, mostly because of the two game limit Gen 1 - NES (Super Mario Bros. & Super Mario Bros 3) Gen 2 - SNES (Super Mario World & Road Runner's Death Valley Rally) Gen 3 - Playstation (Tomb Raider II & Final Fantasy VIII) Gen 4 - Playstation 2 (Final Fantasy X-2 & Shadow Hearts: Covenant) Favorite over all system, I went with PS2. |
