OK, so, I finished Dreamfall: The Longest Journey on Wednesday. I loved the game, even though it is more of an interactive movie. But the 'ending'...
*Twitch* o_0 One one, but several MASSIVE cliffhangers. I'm glad I picked up The Longest Journey after Dreamfall's release, so I was able to go straight into Dreamfall after I'd completed its predecessor. I feel for the poor gamers who suffered a six year wait after The Longest Journey for Dreamfall's release. I just hope the next chapter isn't over half a decade away. I won't talk about the cliffhangers of Dreamfall specifically since adventure games don't usually rely on story, they are story and anything I say will spoil the game for those who haven't played it and may do so. Also, those spoilers aren't specific to what I want to talk about, which is... Which games have left you anxious for the next installment, have unresolved plots or otherwise infuriated you in a good way?

Anyways. this one [spoilerq:1]game title[/spoilerq] [spoilera:1]Tomb Raider Legend[/spoilera] could have done with at least another three levels of gameplay as it just ends - it's like "part one" or something to the point where you can see where a next game might go. At only seven levels it's sort as-is too. I think a lot of games espetially on the PS1 (when endings were FMV) had really short endings given the ammount of gameplay time you put into getting to them. Now (SP2 and newer) it appears more down to the narrative to provide a satisfactory ending seen as games une the game-engine to drive the cut scenses now.

I'll get it out of the way and say Shenmue II. Since that's... basically the worst cliffhanger ever.

I'll have to go with Halo 2. It makes it seem like you are getting ready to head into one final level, which looks to be the best one yet. Then the screen fades out and credits start rolling. That was frustrating as hell.

Psi-Ops has a pretty laughable cliffhanger...felt like the "ending" was patched together at the last minute...wait, what "ending"? At 3 hours 30 minutes, this game is far from long...and this was on my first playthrough!
Halo 2 is obviously a prime example of a cliffhanger ending...makes you wonder what Bungie was doing during all that time...not everyone plays the online multiplayer! :tired: Rainbow Six: Vegas has a cliffhanger that almost feels like Halo 2, but it doesn't lead you onto thinking there's another level like said game. At least you do get to finish part of the job. As mentioned before, Tomb Raider Legend had a cliffhanger...for some reason, it didn't bother me a whole lot...not as much as the first two games on this list. :tired:

In addition to being rather wierd in general near the end, it gives you a big WTF in regards to the Patriots without the Liquid Ocelot stuff being resolved. Then they gave us another game that STILL didn't resolve things (though it was still damn good and gave some nice backstory). I just hope MGS4 wraps the whole thing up and any future games (there will surely be more even if Kojima doesn't do them) are some sort of AU or stars a new main character.

One that jumps out at me is "The Italian Job" game based on the original movie for the PS1. Nice ending but it does leave you hanging.

I'm surprised no one had mentioned [spoilerq:1]This game.[/spoilerq]
[spoilera:1]Final Fantasy VII. The meteor comes down over Midgar, then we see Red and his kids running thousands of years later, Midgar in ruins.[/spoilera] Did any of the characters survive? What happened? (Of course, all this was eventually revealed, but its still a crappy ending.) |
