Default Tenchi Muyo 1st & 2nd OVAs Single releases ?

I have the UE OVA set which i bought long time ago but to tell the truth i am not impressed with the picture quality that much. So i was wondering if getting the single releases (currently Signature Editions) is an upgrade to the UE one ? Well using logic (which doesn't always work ) the Eps count is on 4 DVDs instead of 2 so it should be better in all terms. Any info is appreciated, and many thanks in advance

Don't do it!

Ultimate Edition:
- Remastered clean video.
- Looks like it was recently animated (ala Evangelion Platinum).
- 5.1 Japanese audio (debatable).
- LOTS of extras (but no clean OP/EDs, cry).

The Singles/Greatest Hits:
- The old masters from Pioneer's VHS/LD release.
- Looks really old.
- Rainbows and other source issues.
- 2.0 Japanese audio.
- They squeeze the first four episodes (2 hours approx.) on a single-layered disc.

The only good thing about the singles is the use of a select few R2 DVD covers.

EDIT:

I guess it's not too much of a surprise if the UE discs don't look good on some higher-end equipment.

... But, it still looks gorgeous on mine.

If you have Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki Vol. 1, from FUNimation... you can use the flashbacks in episode 1 of Ryo-Ohki as a reference. That's the same old source used for the singles.

EDIT 2:

I'll go ahead and snap a shot from the UE and the Ryo-Ohki disc.

It won't say much about the actual authoring of the singles for OVA 1 & 2, but just so you understand about the source materials.

EDIT 3:

Okay, here's a few comparrisons.

Left Side: The Ultimate Edition.
Right Side: The Singles. These aren't taken directly from the actual singles. But I am pretty sure AIC used the same masters for the flashbacks shown in Tenchi Muyo Ryo-Ohki 3, episode 1.
This is just an example to show you the difference.

Actually i watched all the 3 Techni OVAs (Genon's & Funi's) back to back and yes i recall that the recaps footages looked really old and grainy compared to the remastered ones....hummm It seems that i am better off with the ones i have anyway.

Well many thanks for the info

I'm still amazed that whoever was working on the new Tenchi OVA's didn't go back and reanimate those shots. I mean you're watching a fairly nicely animated OVA, and then boom you're hit with outdated animation that looks out of place. On the other hand it separates it enough that you can call it a flashback.
