Hooking up a Wii to and HDTV.

I recently got my hands on some Wii component cables yesterday and was looking for a nice new picture when I played LoZ:TP. Instead the picture ended up looking worse once I switched it over to 480p resolution. All the edges of things got kind of jagged. This is my TV. Not sure if there's something I should be turning off or turning on to make the picture better. I'm still a newb to the whole HDTV thing and don't really know all the bells and whistles to my TV. Any input will be helpful.

I experience the same thing and I knew why since I read up on everything before I brought the tv and cables. The first reason was that my tv settings were set to PS3 components. I had to adjust my picture settings (color, sharpness,contrast, etc...) till I got it right. Once I got that ot look beautiful, I programmed it into my tv to memory so When I turn on the Wii, thats the setting it will be at. ANother thing you can check, go to Wii settings and click on the picture option. There should be an option to change your tv form standard tv to HDTV and another to widescreen 16:9 format.

well my PS3 is hooked to to a completely different input than the Wii and each input has it's own settings so I don't think it's at PS3 settings. And I already changed the settings in the Wii it self. I went from a decent picture in 480i setting to a jagged picture when I set it to 480p. If the picture looked decent and all I did was switch from 480i to 480p should the picture just improve?

I have heard that third party cables actually have caused problems on HDTVs. I got myself the official component cables, changed the settings on the tv from 480i to 480p (note, I already had the settings on widescreen) and it worked instantly. I noticed brighter colors and sharper textures. I have no jagged edges nor any of the problems you mention.

If I were you, return the cables you just got and go to Nintendo's online store and buy the component cables online through them.

Jaggies as in things like jagged diagonal lines and edges? If so you have to realize the Wii is not an HD device and 720x480 resolution looks very limited when displayed on a 1920x1080 television screen. It's possible that the tv was softening the image when it had to perform the deinterlacing itself and this was partially masking the jaggies. They're more obvious now because the picture's natural sharpness is improved with less processing being done to it. If anything is making the jaggies stand out like ringing or shimmering then you have your sharpness turned way too high or are using too much noise reduction. Do not bother to take back the component cable you bought. If you had it connected correctly it wasn't the problem.

They probably will (though I agree the cables probably aren't the problem). You just have to go to their customer service counter and raise a (very reasonable, please) stink. Tell them politely that the cables are not satisfactory and you'd like an exchange. Usually they'll fall all over themselves to accommodate the customer, allowing you a non-identical exchange or store credit without the slightest effort on your part. If you try for cash back or a credit to your card, you'll probably have tougher sledding.

In fact, I had a similar experience when hooking up my Wii via component cables to my HDTV, but a bit of fiddling with the video settings (particularly sharpness, and not all that much fiddling) made an huge difference. Wii games (and many GCN games as well) look a ton better than PS2 games on the same TV (also connected via component), thanks to the progressive-scan output.

Oh, I should mention that the Wii's output is actually 854x480 (1.779x1 widescreen). Doesn't help on the vertical, but it does mean the wide aspect is correct, not stretched.

I have those cables and they are plugged into my Panasonic LCD projection TV. I'm actually surprised at how good picture quality is with the Wii and those third-party cables. Colors are clear, the text is sharp. My eyes are pretty sensitive to jagged lines in computers and video games and I don't notice any.
