Default Anime on Japanese Stamps

Since it made the news page... Japan has issued a number of stamps and sheets featuring anime characters since 2000. Atroboy got his own issue, Hello Kitty's 25th anniversary, Gatchaman, Galaxy Express 999, Gundam (I think, I don't recognize characters, just the mecha). A few others I've never heard of: Marvelous Melmo, Time Botan, MadCap Island (saw it once, not sure if the title is correct). The Evangelion issue is the 7th in the series "Heroes and Heroines in Animation", others are in connection with Science and Technology themes.

Just so you know, the J-List over hypes the product. It is not "rare" by any means, about 1,000,000 were issued. The price is about catalogue value,so they are gouging too much.

I bought me a sheet on ebay. 80 yen x 10 stamps comes roughly to 8 dollars US. The sheet cost me 13.50 + 3 shipping. Not too bad I suppose.

I want a set of Hello Kitty stamps to send to friends. Nothings better than sending a letter to someone and having them get it and go "wtf a Hello Kitty stamp?!".

J-list is an import store, so they're selling for import prices (or replace "import" with "export" if you want to be picky). There's no profit in selling stamps at their listed value, and you have to remember to add packaging costs as well. As far as it being "rare" I don't know or have an opinion about it, but j-list only has 4 left in stock. It's possible that they're not planning on adding any more, or that the sales period is limited which is why they're calling it that.

Another thing to consider is that j-list is an affiliate of AoD, and that since this site is fully dependent on affiliate sales to survive it may have been a way to promote that. Or it could just be that Chris came across it and thought it amusing.

There are also the MariMite stamps:

A few other related stamps include Sakura Taisen, Biohazard etc. There are even Jackie Chan stamps.

Note that the price for those are all 3150 yen, even though there's only 800 yen worth of stamps.

I'm waiting for these to be marketed to the otaku of Japan as a way to "lick your favorite anime character". Although this time you can do it legally..
