Default Kurau Phantom Memory

Well as most of you may know Kurau's free preview is on Anime News Network and it's pretty good. I admit the first episode moved a long at a snail's pace and didn't capture attention, I'm hoping this was just a minor blip. The voice work is solid, but for some reason the show is lacking something, I just can't quite put my finger on it.

It's called exposition.

The first ep is full of it. After that the story and the action picks up. Just keep watching and if you don't like it you can kick my butt later.

I really like the show. It says a lot about relationships...

Okay I'm going to hold you to that, if I don't like it which I'm going to doubt that I won't because I'm assuming this was a minor blip, but if I really don't like it after a while, I will be breaking out the kicking shoes so i can lightly tap you on the behind with my feet.

That's why I've been looking forward to this show since ADV announced they had it back in... 1964, I think it was.

I'm going to post my comments about the dub work for Vol. #1 here because I'm afraid if I start another Kurau: Phantom Memory thread, it might be locked for redundancy, and that would be a bit embarrassing on my part.

So with that, I was lucky enough to find a copy of Vol. #1 at my Best Buy today, a week before its scheduled street date of April 10. After watching it earlier today, I was thoroughly impressed with how consistent the performances were, especially form both Monica and Jessica. The Izumi-style vocals I thought fit the character Kurau very well, and Jessica gives yet another solid performance as the cute Christmas. But then again, playing cutsy, mascot-type characters has been Jessica's forte during her career (which I implied that during the Guessing Game ) so I didn't expect nothing less than another winning performance.

As for the show itself, I thought the first episode paced itself pretty good. Yes, it's a bit slow, but it set up the premise of the series very well in my view. The series definitely picked up once Christmas made her debut, and thus far it looks like it's going to be another solid Studio BONES series. The relationship angle was a given considering that Kurau is a Studio BONES title, and any BONES fan knows that their titles play heavily on relationships.

yeah, just from the first episode you really don't get any idea what the show is about. They had a free screening at the Drafthouse and I'll be honest, I was on the fence about this one. Despite the fact that The Monica was in it, I had seen the promo art for it, and it didn't appeal to me. So I was thinking I may 'back burner' it for a few months. But it REALLY takes off after that first episode (which is all just introduction to Kurau herself basically) and by the end of episode 4 I was really angry that there was not an episode 5 on disc one. You really want to know as much about Kurau and Christmas as possible as quickly as possible. Jessica plays off Monica SO WELL, I mean they are just really good together. Kurau is also much more feminine and sexy on screen than she is in the artwork, which makes you want to know even more about her. But best of all - despite the fact that it is a yuri love-fest, there is not one single gratuitous panty shot or geeky pervert trying to see down someone's shirt (or up their skirt). Though the private eye guy comes pretty close, but he is not doing it for sexual gratification, so I guess we can't hate him for that, we can only dislike him for being on the wrong side. Tiffany Grant plays one of our 'villians' although I am not sure if that is the appropriate term since it is so early in the series, but she's a cop and Kurau is running from the cops, sooooooo....

After watching it, I decided I would most likely forgo getting School Rumble and get this instead.

You were there too, eh??

My friends and I were ready to leave the theater during episode 1. We're glad we stayed though. Episodes 2-4 were an improvement.
