Being able to resume discs is one of my main reasons for sticking with a PS3 for the moment. Not only can the PS3 do this, but it can also keep track of dozens of discs - I have a stack of ~25 series (I try to cut down on it, but it's hard with a huge backlog) that I watch on-and-off (some more regulary than others) and it can keep track of nearly all of them (unless it's been months/many many discs since I last popped it in).

Can the Oppo BDP-83 resume play even after several other discs have been played in between, and remembering to resume position each of the discs correctly?

This is something my old PannyXP50 used to do and I absolutely adored it. The PS3 does it but I tend to use my DV 983H for dvds to cut down on the heat in the room. It does not resume discs and it's a sad thing that I miss. If I ever get another bluray player, I'm getting a BDP 83 partly because it's the best for its price and now also for this feature.

To answer my own question:

From the Oppo BDP-83 manual (page 38):
Quote:
The player can remember playback position for up to 5 discs.
When the sixth disc is memorized, the oldest one is replaced.
So, sorry... unless this limit has been expanded with a firmware upgrade, the PS3 handles this better with a limit of many more discs (somewhere between 20 and 50 I think).

Oh, that's a nice feature. My Sony dvd player is like the Oppo, it's limited to a total of five discs.

But I find that's usually enough as I rarely watch more than five series at a time and I find that when I come to the end of a dvd, the player will remove it from it's memory, thus opening up a free slot. Plus, you can prevent it from memorizing a dvd (like say a movie you don't want to finish) by simply ejecting the disc during pause. If you press stop, it will memorize it.

Still, this is one feature that I wish more players would have.

Still no sound system, but new TV got here today and it's big. New TV is an LG 55LH90, and I'll be playing with the settings tonight.

Welcome to the big leagues!

I've always considered 55" the beginning of the real home theatre experience and once you've gone this size, you can never go back. The only way anyone would get my 61" Samsung away from me, is over my cold dead body.

Now, you just need a good receiver, 5 to 7 decent speakers and a sub-woofer to finish the job.

I've been looking into Onkyo 7.1 systems but I probably won't be buying one until winter.

I had my old Pioneer 46" rear projection tv for years before I finally broke down and added a sound system. Then every five years or so I had to update the sound system, first when DTS started to appear on dvd's, then when a back channel was added and finally when HD audio appeared. I'd no sooner get happy and contented with it, than the damn thing would become obsolete.

So that's the nice thing about waiting. The longer you do, the more features you get and the less you pay.
