There's no new audio formats on the horizon now though, so it should be a lot safer to commit to a sound system. Waiting won't necessarily reduce prices.

The only reason I can think of to wait right now would be to ensure that you get a receiver with HDMI 1.4, since that means it's future proof if you ever decide to get a 3D system.

And the new receivers that eventually get DisplayPort in them. Then there's also the new high front channel that they are starting to put into receivers (though I don't think it really adds much if anything) like Dolby Pro Logic IIz.

There will always be new formats because it's one of the ways that the sound companies get people to buy new stuff. Whether it actually does anything is probably up to your own ears to decide.

A new Onkyo 608 could probably last you at least 5-10 years if it stays working without really having a huge need to upgrade though.

Why would they put displayport on them? That's just another cost, and home theater equipment uses HDMI.

Which is when I'll probably have to update my receiver for the forth time, yet again.

But since I've spent $3,000 on the present set just a couple of years back, that's gonna be a long time from now.

Yah, I agree. I mean, how many sound channels do we really need, anyways? It's definitely getting to the point of diminishing returns.

Even my rear very seldom adds anything different to the surrounds. Though I'm still glad I added it. And personally, I think the second sub-woofer channel is nothing more than a way to pry extra money out of the consumer. But hey, if you want to waste your money on a second sub, be my guest.

But high's, ceiling's, butts channels and god knows what else they're working on, thanks but no thanks. I've gone as far as I want to now.

If there is nothing to add that year, it's an easy way to add another bullet point to the spec sheet.

I know it's an added cost but it'll happen eventually when the price is right, especially with multiple monitor HTPC set ups getting more popular.

I updated my setup with an Acoustic Reality eAR 202-REF power amplifier today. I figured my surround receiver could use some help on the power front, and it definitely hasn't disappointed. The ICEpower technology is a bit controversial among hi-fi buffs, but I quite like how my setup sounds, at least after listening through the first CD.
