Xcalibur, i messed up. that should be 62 not 82, my bad. i thought the model looked off when i typed it but ignored it

anyway, i don't see my father that often but from what i hear, he rarely uses the den anymore so the tv is not used much. that said, we are both thinking of upgrading to the new 52" XBR3 so, my Sammy and his Sharp will prob go to the guest bedrooms or sumthin

Default I'm a dork

TV: 42" Samsung 720p DLP HL-S4266W TV
A/V Receiver: Yamaha HTR-5990 7.1 (2 HDMI)
Speakers: Athena AS-F2.2 Tower Mains, AS-C1.2 Center, AS-B2.2 Bookshelf surrounds, AS-P6000 12" Downfiring 200w RMS sub
DVD: LG DVB418 Upscaling Region-free via component
HD-DVD: XBox 360 Add-On via component
HD Cable: Comcast DVR box via component
Game systems: Almost every one between Atari 2600 and XBox 360 (No TurboGrafix, PS3, or 3DO... yet).

A nice setup for a small, 2 bedroom townhouse. Eventually I plan to build a dedicated home theater once I own my own house but for sitting less than 8 feet away, 42" is good enough. Just wish I'd had the money at the time for 1080p. Oh well.

Yeah, projector's aren't really an option for me since I've just got my room to work with and that's it... I do have the Dell 2407 though, so I feel a little better.

Used to watch my Anime on my PC screen, but it really was a POS for watching them, so I bought a Portable DVD player (yes, even smaller it was better than my PC setup). I watch all my Anime at home and on my work breaks/lunch now. Specifically:

Portable 7 Inch DVD Player: Zenith DVP615.

I don't know, you tell me. Um, my screen resolution is set to 1280x1024 so...? It's a computer monitor so I assume it can do progressive? ::shrugs:: 1080p then, I guess? My computer doesn't seem like it can handle high def video well anyway, so it's probably moot.
your vertical resolution (1024) is close to 1080p, but its fixed. So even if you can display 1080p material (non-fullscreen, windowed native resolution) your monitor will scale it to fit 1024, otherwise the window will be partially displayed. The same applies for the horizontal resolution. If you have a non-fixed-pixel display like a CRT, depending on its specs (support for 1920x1080 or greater), you can display HD although it will be letterboxed due to the inherent 4:3 aspect ratio of the monitor, unless its a widescreen, which I can't remember seeing any 16:9 CRT capable of 1080p.

While only technically 1080p, a lot of CRT computer monitors can exceed the 1080 lines of a 1080p set, but as you mentioned before these displays are usually in a 4:3 ratio and therefore do not have a 1920x1080 resolution. For example, a CRT monitor with 1080 vertical lines would have 1440 horizontal lines instead of 1920 on a widescreen display.

There are some Sony 24" wide monitors that were sold in the US and Japan earlier this decade that can display up to 2304x1440. I'm tempted to get one but they go for $500+ used and I watch mostly 4:3 anime anyways.

Edit: And since most (all?) CRT monitors don't support digital connections or HDCP, you'd have to get something that can take the 1080i analog signal from a BD or HD DVD player (even without the ICT, none output full 1080p over analog) and convert it to a VGA analog signal. Something like a DVDO VP50 video processor, which goes for $2500-$3000 new. Not an easy or inexpensive option, but I don't think there are many other options for watching 1080p on a CRT.

yep, my CRT can display up to 2048x1536. And as mentioned earlier, the image won't fill the screen, but will display the full 1920x1080 within the player's window. The video will be extremely small, but there is no rescaling or cropping that is done since all the resolution is resolved within a 2048x1536 frame.

how did I forget about that? The Sony GDM-FW900 was one of the monitors I was considering at the time I got the Mitsu (currently using), until I saw its price tag. Maybe that's why I couldn't remember it so easily. :D
