Default VA Draft--Irresponsible Captain Tylor!

...revealed as soon as round 10 is complete!

Sorry for the tease there, but hey, what's the VA Draft, if not fun?

Seriously, however, I wanted to announce a certain aspect about the casting phase of the VA Draft which is new to this year's draft.

In previous drafts, there have been a number of required characters and optional characters: eight required and two characters chosen from a pool of optionals.

This year, there will be only five required characters. But (and this is a big but, and I like this big but and I cannot lie), the remaining optional characters will be divided up into smaller groups of two or three characters apiece.

Rather than picking and choosing the optional characters, you will pick at least two groups of optional characters and cast all of them with the actors you have drafted. (The solitary exception to the "no picking and choosing" rule would be if you were two choose two two-person optional groups, and needed one more character so that all ten of your actors were cast in the show).

The reason for this rule is because, to me, the interesting part of the anime draft is interesting (if imagined) chemistry of actors working with each other. To foster this, the optional groups will consist of characters who frequently interact with each other. For instance, if we had had this rule in effect for the Evangelion draft, one of the groups might have consisted of Toji, Kensuke, and Hikari, while another might have been the bridge bunnies.

You will, of course, be welcome to choose more than two of the groups if you desire. Multi-casting is A-OK for this draft.

To summarize the casting rules:

1. You must cast all ten of your drafted actors.
2. You must cast all five of the required characters, and all of the actors from at least two of the optional groupings
3. You may not pick-and-choose actors from the optional grouping2, unless you chose two two-character groups, and need a tenth character in order to obey rule 1.

Edit: The show to be cast will be The Irresponsible Captain Tylor. Details and character list to follow shortly.

Required characters

Lt. Cmdr. Justy Ueki Tylor, age 20. The mysterious irresponsible man. Goes from being unemployed and possibly homeless to commanding the United Planets Space Force destroyer Soyokaze in a matter of days. He's not particularly military, does not care for rules, he wants an easy, relaxing life. Is he a genius or an idiot? Opinions differ on the subject. English VA: Crispin Freeman.

Lt. Cmdr. Yuriko Star, age 19. A career-minded military woman. She is an outstanding officer with a bright future, and a strong sense of duty. Not the least hesitant to indicate her displeasure to Captain Tylor. On the ship, she is the intelligence officer. English VA: Rachael Lillis.

Lt. Makoto Yamamoto, age 25. First office of the Soyokaze, and completely by-the-books. So much so, that unlike Yuriko, he finds himself obeying his captain's orders, no matter how idiotic they seem to him. English VA: J. David Brimmer

Azalyn, Empress Goza the 16th, age 16. After losing her beloved father to a suspicious death (widely blamed on the UPSF), she is made Empress of the Holy Raalgon Empire, where ministers and advisers do their best to manipulate her to do their bidding. She has a very strong sense of responsibility to her empire, but she is also a young girl, and she is very curious to hear about the UPSF's irresponsible captain. English VA: Lisa Ortiz.

Capt. Ru Baraba Dom, age 23. Commander of the cruiser Doroume in the Raalgon Imperial Navy. A protege of Admiral Lonawer, Dom is a thoughtful leader, not impulsive and not particularly warlike, and fascinated with the unpredictable Tylor. Above all, he is personally loyal to the Empress, and suspicious of her prime minister. English VA: Josh Mosby.

Bridge officers:
Lt. (j.g.) Harold Katori, age 20. Helm officer of the Soyokaze, and the epitome of unflappable. Quietly confident in his abilities. English VA: Ed Paul.

Lt. (j.g.) Kyung-Hwa Kim, age 18. Communications office of the Soyokaze. Flirty and vivacious, but competent. English VA: Jill Seifers.

Pilots:
Ensign Kojiro Sakai, age 19. Ace pilot, but terrified of women. Too bad the Hanner twins make him their Special Friend. English VA: Buddy Woodward.

Pilot trainee Yumi Hanner, age 17. Young daughter of retired Admiral Hanner--looks up to Yuriko and worships Tylor. Aims to be a great pilot. English VA: Lisa Ortiz.

Pilot trainee Emi Hanner, age 17. Identical twin of Yumi. They frequently finish each other's sentences. English VA: Lisa Ortiz.

Medical staff:
Dr. Hidezaburo Kitaguchi, age [hide]33[/hide]. Veteran military surgeon, claims to work best when inebriated. Tylor's drinking buddy. English VA: Stan Hart.

Petty Officer Harumi Nakagawa, age [hide]3![/hide]. Nurse with a mysterious past. Incredibly statuesque and gorgeous. The men willingly injure themselves to receive her tender care. She is fascinated by Tylor. English VA: Carol Jacobanis (her debut role in anime, IIRC).

The Holy Raalgon Empire:
Capt. Shia Has, age 21. An impetuous, aggressive officer in the Raalgon forces. Works closely with Dom, although she does not understand his fascination with Tylor. Wears a very... interesting... uniform. English VA: Veronica Taylor.

Adm. Yutta Do Lonawer, age 55. A respected, and cautious Admiral of the Raalgon forces. Distrusts Wang, and pins his hope on his protege, Dom.

Prime Minister Naku Ra Wang, age 65. A power-hungry Raalgon politician, who wishes to capitalize on the suspicious death of the previous Emperor to enhance his own position. English VA: Nathan Price.

The UPSF Admiralty:
Vice Adm. Sesshu Mifune, age 55. Commander of the UPSF Outer Fleet. Very military, very traditional--he is never seen without his katana in hand. While not afraid of battle, he is more conservatively cautious than Admiral Fuji. Hates Tylor with a white-hot passion. English VA: Robert O'Gorman.

Lt. Adm. Susumu Fuji, age 51. Chief of staff of the UPSF: effectively, the top officer in the military. He's very aggressive--as far as the Raalgon Empire is concerned, he wants to shoot first. Hates Tylor with a white-hot passion. English VA: Ross Charap.

The Marines:
Master Sgt. Mickey Cryburn, age 32. Leads the Marines' assaults. A violent roughneck, who cares little for military discipline and protocol. Used to getting his own way by force. English VA: Nathan Price.

Lt. (j.g.) Karl-Bjorn Andressen, age 28. Pilots the Marines' drop-ship. Somewhat more suave than Cryburn (and clearly a bit narcissitic about his own looks)--spends more time with the Marines than with the pilots or the other commissioned officers on the ship. English VA: Joe Dopico.

Special bonus character
Jason, age ?. A marine who wears a hockey mask and frequently carries a chainsaw. A rather dodgy character. Speaks only in muffled tones (think Kenny from South Park). English VA: Himself.

If I'm reading this right, if you pick two three-person groups (if there are two three-person groups) You need to cast all six optional characters?

Yes. As far as characters from optional groups are concerned, it's all or nothing (with the single exception to that rule which I outlined.)

Five, eh? Huh.

Oh! I wonder...I'll have to give this some more thought while I go feed my pet rabbit. He just loves meatballs.

I expected as much.

Anyway, sounds interesting. This is a brand new system, right? When I used to lurk these forums, I remember the last two drafts didn't do this.

I'm of the opinion that it'll be a show that's been completed released already. But that's just my guess.

I'm definitely going to guess that the show is Cowboy Bebop, I've almost thought this way Cowboy Bebop from the start, even though I know Geo will not admit it, it is Cowboy Bebop.
