Default Anime Eras...

So I've been looking at what I like, and most of it is older. I don't know of many recent series I've cared to follow, aside from Yakitate Japan. I've sat through fansubs of the likes of Hellsing and very early Naruto, but nothing really sticks.

What's the best way to discover new and interesting series? I have kinda eclectic taste, so pretty much anything could prove interesting. Or is it that the old stuff really is better? What era do you prefer?

Well you indicated you have no problem with fansubs, so there are hundreds of series out there waiting from just the past few years. Only the most disturbingly stubborn person completely set in their ways and not open at all to anything new (or someone who narrowly restricts themselves to one genre and one genre only, and then that genre falls out of favor) would be unable to find *anything*, so I think you just need to look harder. Sure Naruto is popular, but I'm pretty sure you could do better than that Especially if you actually do have eclectic tastes, as you claim. It's almost unthinkable that there aren't dozens of shows out there waiting for you, shows you would love. Simply because there's such a variety.

The above applies to R1 DVD too of course. And there are plenty of newer shows available in really cheap boxsets, so you don't have to risk as much as if you were buying singles from scratch.

I'd say to check out the Recommendations forum and be a little more specific about your likes and dislikes.

If you have the time, you could easily breeze through the first episode of series to see if you'll like it. Fansubs are easily available and plentiful. There's no need to force yourself to watch something because that's not really what enjoying anime is about.
