I have seen the both of them. First thing first, if you want it...run it is geneon titles and it is out of print. I own the both of them. Of course, with my taste in animes, I will recommend it to you right away. But, I do not know what you like so... Read about them, if you seem to like it, you can not make a mistake then.

Grumble Grumble Grumble

'Gankutsuou, the Count of Monte Cristo' is easily one of the best TV Anime series that studio GONZO has ever put out. The Japanese Anime community thought highly enough of the series to award it one of the 'Best Anime TV Series' award at the Tokyo Anime Fair for the year it came out... (And if I remember correctly, this is the only GONZO TV series that has taken this award...)

'Samurai Champloo' is a different story. If you liked 'Afro Samurai' or think that Samurai bushido and Hip Hop goes together, then run on out and buy this series, otherwise its passable...

'Galaxy Railways' is a must buy only if your a fan of the works of Leji Matsumoto, (e.g. Space Pirate Captain Harlock, Galaxy Express 999), but if your not, then many of the references to these previous works will fly right over your head...

Gankutsuou is one of Gonzo's best. When they're really on their game, they can make some incredible shows. This is one of them. I'm really not good at the 1-10 scale sorta thing, but I guess I can call it a high 8[?], which is quite good. What it does best is keep everything very, very tense from start to finish. The pacing is by and large superb and once you get used to the unique animation (don't worry, this seriously takes like 15 minutes, not 15 episodes) it's really a great looking show.

Samurai Champloo would probably rate about a low 7, if Gankutsuou is high 8, which again is good. It doesn't have nearly the depth of story Gankutsuou has, but makes up for it with a great sense of style. I by no means am interested in the hip hop culture/aesthetic but the bits and pieces that are harnessed here work well. And the fights are enjoyable as well. Also, Fuu is sexy.

Watch Gankutsuou if you're in the mood for a complex story and high tension. Watch Samurai Champloo if you want to sit back and watch an action show.

Gankutsuou and Samurai Champloo are both quite good series. I'd give Gankutsuou a 9 out of 10, and Samurai Champloo an 8 out of 10. Gankutsuou has a great revenge plot, lifted from the original Count of Monte Cristo novel, but with enough innovations and interpretations to keep it fresh and interesting, while still retaining much of the sharpness of the original source. Samurai Champloo 's anachronistic humor really worked for me, as did the strange comedy drama interaction. I have described it to people as a sort of Cowboy Bebop set in samurai Japan.

Galaxy Railways - I've given up on getting into that story universe a long time ago, since all series are connected, and there is no proper way to collect it, since the original series was never even available in English. If you'd know all about it, you would probably own it already. Since you don't, it's much safer not to bother.

Gankutsuou - 8. Not a perfect show, but a very strong presentation and faithful to the source material.

Samurai Champloo - 8. Also a very strong presentation of an original, if somewhat derivative and highly episodic, story.

Galaxy Railways - 4. Good modern material for fans of Matsumoto's stuff, but as with all of his works, characterization is its weak point and the sci-fi elements are largely used as backdrop. Recommended if you liked Space Battleship Yamato or Gun Frontier.

I haven't seen Galaxy Railways, but Gankutsuou and Samurai Champloo are both worth the price. Gankutsuou especially.

I picked up the first volume of Gankutsou during the last Rightstuff Geneon25 sale and just watched it the other day.

It does have a good plot but to be honest about it, the bizarre animation just completely ruined it for me. There's nooooo way I'm ever going to watch any more of it. On my 61" set, it's just way too hard on the eyes!

So I'd recommend you rent the first disc first & see if you can stand the look of it. Seriously!!!

Galaxy Railways is nice if you like Matsumoto's stuff. Otherwise, you'd probably be wise to take a pass.

An interesting show, but certainly not faithful to the source material in major ways.
