Default MS IGLOO coming to Blu-ray via Bandai Visual Japan

Taken from Gunota:

"The previous installments of MS IGLOO will also hit Blu-Ray: August 22 for The Hidden One Year War and September 26 for Apocalypse 0079. Additionally, The Hidden One Year War, having been previously available in Japan only in limited DVD release, will finally be available there on a standard DVD release on June 25."

I've so far held off on buying MS IGLOO on DVD, maybe BVUSA will follow suit and rerelease it on Blu-ray?

And here I thought that my wallet was going to have a break now that Clannad is close to finishing its R2 DVD run for now.

Time to save up again...

Given their intention to release titles for the US & Japan simultaneously there is a very good chance that the BD will have the English sub given that they already have & own the script from the R1 DVD release. Oh well, let's wait and see.

I'm hoping for a Region 1 release. Shipping from Japan is very expensive.

Hmm, considering the first eps of MS Igloo came out in 2004, it's possible these will be upconverts. Will have to wait for more details to be sure.

It's CG, so it can probably just be re-rendered at whatever resolution they like.

That's not free, and it might not even be possible if, say, they've upgraded the rendering pipeline they used and it's not 100% backwards compatible.
It's not like brushing dust off a film canister and plugging it into the telecine machine.

For example, in the cowboy bebop remasters the CG effects weren't re-rendered at HD, so it was either too expensive or not possible.

I wonder, for instance, if Pixar could do a full HD rerender of Toy Story, for instance, at the present time... The software technology has changed so much, it wouldn't be trivial, I suspect.

Another, better possibility is that the show was rendered in HD resolutions to begin with, since it was full CG, perhaps in anticipation of airing in theaters that would need a film-quality print.

I never saw this film at the theater, but I assumed that the resolution used would have been higher than NTSC. I don't don't think that 1080 specs were developed when it was released so there might not be 1:1 pixel matching for a HD version, but I'd like to think that they would have put a bit of effort (at least something like SVGA/XGA in quality) into something that was presented in the theater.

I realize that the original render probably was at a plenty high enough resolution (I wouldn't be surprised if pixar did 5000x2000 or higher), I was asking the question more as a "could they" than a "do they need to"?

In the same respect, it depends on the mindset of the people when they were animating Igloo...
It wasn't a normal TV or DVD release, being shown only at a museum for a while (correct?), so maybe it was produced with more lofty ambitions in mind and rendered at a higher resolution to begin with.
