Picked this up from Joystiq:
Variety reports that Universal has signed a deal to turn Bioshock into a movie. Director Gore Verbinski (Pirates of the Caribbean) will head the project and Aviator writer John Logan may write the screenplay. There is also an interview with Verbinski on Variety's Cut Scene blog where he discusses the project. He believes the movie will be rated R and says in terms of the Little Sisters that he'll take the issue "right up to the edge" and doesn't want the core audience to feel "betrayed." What do you all think? Does this one have a chance? |

It wouldn't surprise me since the game unfolded cinematically and had a great narrative.

I don't know. While the game's story was good, I don't think it'll translate well into a movie. If they can manage to script a first person narrative, it might work, otherwise it'll probably just end up like most game->movie adaptations. The game had some RPG elements to it and I question what route it will take, Harvest vs Save? If they stay true to the game, the 'bad' ending does open up for a sequel if the movie turns out to be a success. I think the harvest scenes will need to be retained if they do use that route. They should kindly retain Mr. Bubbles (in both forms) to ensure the movie has any chance of satisfying the core audience.

Well it does have the Pirates guy doing it, so he'll know how to do all the underwater stuff. I'd be surprised if the "Big Daddies" weren't in the movie at all. You can get a central plot line going, I'm psyched about it. Of course I agree with your skepticism in that no video game movie has been that great but at least this one seems to have decent staff.

I think it does, and after seeing some of the more experimental scenes in Pirates 3, I'm excited to see what Verbinski will bring to the table this time. The man has a fascinating approach to cinema aesthetics.

You mean so the artist would not fear the censor? (insert rimshot here)
Bioshock would make a GREAT movie if done right, but for some reason Hollywood never seems to go through with movies based on games that already have a good plot. They just let Uwe Boll continue to make movies based on games with little plot, and give them even less plot. I don't know why this is--you'd think Hollywood would jump on a game with a preexisting original plot.

Well, this is good news, expecially considering that I cannot play the game since I have no Xbox and my laptop is under spec. I'm a fan of the System Shock series so this has been a blow to me so far.
