I'm trying to put together an order for the Deepdiscount sale and I can't figure out which of these collections I should get. I only have about 50 dollars to spend so I have to decide between two of these:
Gundam Seed (both sets) Gundam 0080 + Char's Counterattack Gundam 0083 Gundam 08th MS Team Infinite Ryvius Planetes Fantastic Children Silent Mobius The first order I made a week ago was for all of G Gundam and Gundam Wing so I'm not sure if I should buy more Gundam or other stuff. I plan on buying all of this in the future and I'm sure I'll like most if not all of them so it's just a matter of what gets priority. What do you guys recommend? |

I'd check out Chris's review on Silent Mobius. I won't spend too much time on it as I concur with his review on it, especially the older review of the singles. Really enjoyed the series back in the day and it's still a sentimental favorite of mine.

I'm a total newbie to Gundam. Where should I start?

I've checked the reviews on here for all of these shows and Chris pretty much rated all of them A's or high B's across the board, so that didn't really help me much at all. Anybody else have any suggestions?

Not being much of a Gundam fan myself and not knowing your particular tastes, I'd still recommend Planetes and Fantastic Children as being the best of the bunch.
Planetes is a pretty accurate portrayal of life in space and presents a tale of stilted personal ambition as well as an exploration of the socio-political aspects of technological development. Starts out fairly humoursly but then gets deadly serious. Great love-of-space-exploration series. Very highly recommended. Fantastic Children is a mostly Earth-bound tale of love, life and loss across space and time. Very imaginative series with loads of space opera elements. Highly recommended.

I've always heard that Wing and Seed (I haven't seen Seed mind you) are good places to start. Back during the Toonami days, Wing got a lot of people into anime itself. I'd say start with that.

Infinite Ryvius is just like the previous poster described it. It has it's moments of insanity with it's own insight on humanity and how it deals with being thrown into space in a particular situation. And as for 8th MS Team, I recommend it because it is very different from every other Gundam Show in the fact that it focuses on two individuals from the different sides that had a chance encounter that made them grow in affection for one another. It does deal a bit with politics and the events in the war, but focuses on a group of soldiers and how they deal with one another.

Grumble Grumble Grumble
Personally, I found 'Infinite Ryvius' a boring dissapointment. The story is essentially 'The Lord of the Flies' in space. (The book bored me to tears too, which probably explains my opinion on this series...) Now at the Anime Industry sponsered Tokyo International Anime Fair for the year 2004, 'Gundam Seed' took the Grand Prize of Animation of the Year, (which is rare for a TV series to do so), which gives an indication of the high regards earned by this series... http://www.tokyoanime.jp/en/animeawa...l/2004/001.php 'Planetes' is one of the best recent 'hard-core' Sci-Fi series to come out in recent years, and if you like hard-core Sci-fi series, I would put this on your priority list...

I would say it's more "hard" sci-fi....than "hard-core" ... but your intent and meaning is right on the money.
