In Summary:
One thing I’ve learned over the years is that tastes can certainly change, both for the better and for the worse. When the OVA first came out, it left me feeling cold. When the TV series came out, seeing it in single disc form was an exercise in torture. So a year later, I was curious as to whether it would play out better in a collection taken in over a day or two. Unfortunately, it feels even worse as the repetitive nature and lack of anything more to it shines through all the more. Moeyo Ken is an ideal show for someone new to anime, someone who hasn’t been exposed to all of it before. Done before and done better at that. It has a great look to it as I love Takahashi’s character designs and the lighter nature of it all, but the stories are just dull as watching paint dry and longer than most other shows are by a couple of minutes at that.

I've only seen a few episodes, when it appeared on TAN on demand, and it was painful viewing. I definitely agree this is really only for someone new to anime. It's all been done elsewhere, and done far better.

I don't get that advise at all. If it's so bad and everything in it has been done better elsewhere, why would you want to show it to someone unfamiliar with anime? Show them the GOOD stuff, not the crap!

It's not total crap, but it's not something someone who's seen a lot of anime would have much interest in, in my opinion.

Besides, it's better to see a certain amount of crap early on. That way, when you get to the better stuff, you can have that sense of "Wow, now that was awesome."

If you start someone at the very top, and then they start seeing the morass of average shows, they might well be turned off. Or become one of those people who looks at any new anime and just says "Eh, I've seen that before, and done better in _______."

It's better to get a realistic sense that there's good and bad (and, of course, that's entirely subjective. I might consider Moeyo Ken pretty average, but there might be people out there who love it, just as there are surely those who hate it) in anime, rather than trying to give someone new the impression that it's all good. Balance in everything.

Not a show I'm interested in really... so I don't know if I'll ever pick it up. I've already seen so much anime that when I see something already done before, I bore.

I will probably pass up on this series. If the price is right, I may reconsider.

I bought the singles & OVA long time ago but didn't watch them yet. The main reason i did was due to Rumiko's involvement in it, as for the show i wasn't expecting much of it so i guess it won't matter anyway
