Default Fansubs streamed... with permission from Japan?

So, I've noticed a few things that are a bit odd when it comes to Crunchyroll recently.

They took down ALL fansubbed videos as of Jan 1st, and only have shows provided from the publishers... Or so they say, anyway.

There are a couple of shows that are still around, and are still the fansub versions.

These are all the ones I've found so far:

Pierott:
Magical Angel Creamy Mami
http://www.crunchyroll.com/library/M...Mami?src=trail

Pony Canyon:
http://www.crunchyroll.com/library/D4_Princess
http://www.crunchyroll.com/library/Hanaukyo_Maid
http://www.crunchyroll.com/library/Kotetsushin_Jeeg
http://www.crunchyroll.com/library/Love_Love
http://www.crunchyroll.com/library/Rizelmine
http://www.crunchyroll.com/library/Ultimate_Girls
http://www.crunchyroll.com/library/Yume_Tsukai
http://www.crunchyroll.com/library/Steel_Angel_Kurumi

Now, I would have thought this was an oversight or something, but these are all listed now with the official groups as their Group Moderator, and the fact is that they are both companies that CR has contracts with for Naruto and Steel Angel Kurumi respectively.

These are all fansubbed versions, NOT official subtitles, and they seemed to be streamed with permission, however CR hasn't mentioned them in press releases probably because they are trying to not make a big deal out of streaming fansubs for profit.

Does anyone know what's going on or have an opinion? (the fact that "Yume Tsukai" fansub happens to be MY fansub definitely irks me)

My first reaction is that fansubbers, at least as they exist now—people guilty of participating in massive video piracy on a global scale—are in no position to be complaining about people using their work. (If there’s anyone out there who creates subtitle files intended solely for end-user overlay onto legit DVD/BDs or legit Japanese internet streams, I’d sure like to meet them.)

My second reaction is that if seeing your unauthorized translations used by actual rights holders “irks” you, I must question your motivations for fansubbing.

Having said that, I, too, am wondering what’s up with Rizelmine, et al.
As ridiculous as it would be for fansubbers to complain, it’s still illegal to distribute those subs without permission from all parties who share rights to them, of which the fansubbers are one if they’ve insisted on reserving those rights.

It’s not as if fansubbers are in a position to negotiate anything in exchange beyond perhaps amnesty for their own crimes, but if CR is doing this without permission, it puts them on the same level as the fabsubbers, which is not what those of us who support legit internet distribution want to see.

People are really taking this the wrong way... The mentioning of it "irk"ing me was supposed to be an in cheek reference to my past discretions, not some serious vendetta.

I'm under no impression I have any "rightS" in a case like this. I'm much more interested in documenting what "might" be the first time a fan subtitled file has been legally approved for streaming by the Japanese. And questioning the circumstances in which it is happening as highly suspicious.

It strikes me that there is, to an extent, precedence for this.

Several conventions have, with consent of the Japanese license holder, screened fansubs of shows in their viewing rooms.

A private one time screening is far far different than allowing a video to be streamed on the internet to anyone in the world (outside japan) while collecting ad revenue for it.

Quite shocking really. While near enough all fansubbers strive to point out their work should be distributed for free, CR has the nerve to add such streams to their site in order to make a profit from them.
That Ghibli film will also be turning them a pretty profit considering its not available on DVD yet and hasn't been in US cinema.
So much for CR turning a new, legal, leaf...
