As my experimental VA of the month polls continue having selected Tiffany Grant for the month of January, I decided to make Vic Mignogna the VA for February seeing that I met him at Ohayocon last weekend and that the Steelers won the Super Bowl. As evidenced by his custom-made jersey he wore last Sunday that the Pittsburgh native is indeed a Steelers fan. The longtime veteran has been everywhere and has voiced so many memorable characters. Word on the street is that his preparing to move from Houston. Since he has had way too many roles to count, I am upping the limit to 10 roles. You may select up to ten roles.

Vic is definitely an iconic VA with a lot of really great roles so it's a difficult undertaking to pick and choose favorites.
My favorite ones though: (in order) Carrossea Doon (Madlax) Kurz Weber (Full Metal Panic) Edward Elric (Full Metal Alchemist) Hiroki Takasugi (Princess Nine) Dark Mousy (DNAngel) Sugino (Tactics)

Him and Edward Elric are the two standout roles in my mind.

You had all of those roles listed, yet you missed Femio, once of his best roles? Shame...
My "other" vote was placed for Femio, and also voted for Yukito Kunisaki, Dark Mousy, and Angelic Layer Host as favorites.

Here they are in alphabetical order by show:
Host, Angelic Layer Why? Vic throws himself into the role and his performance adds great comedy and drama to the fight scenes without you even realizing he's doing it. Despite being such an outrageous personality, he never overacts or tries to steal the scene. Perfect direction and perfect acting. Kurz Weber, Full Metal Panic Why? Epic fun, that's why. Vic is beautifully smarmy and slick. The raid on the hot springs in Fumoffu was a highlight. But he can also show some real depth in the serious scenes, such as the finales of the first series and The Second Raid. Edward Elric, Fullmetal Alchemist Why? Comedy, drama, pathos, heart, it's all there. Raven, Gravion Why? Wonderful melodrama. In fact the whole show was a melodrama. But that's what made it so much fun. Vic really nailed this one. The highlight? Raven getting drunk. Dew, Hakugei Why? I'm probably the only person who will vote for this one, because I'm just about the only person who got it. This role is pure drama, something of a change for Vic. He's so good at comedy, one can sometimes forget what a great dramatic actor he is. Carrossea Doon, Madlax Why? Another great dramatic role. He's not simply mysterious, but exudes both charm and danger, a great combination. Mugiyama, Mezzo Why? Because of Vic's youthful voice, you never get to hear him play a heavy. He does a great job with the gleefully murderous Mugiyama. Hiroki Takasugi, Princess Nine Why? Because this is the role that made me aware of him in the first place. This is the show that turned me from a dub hater to a dub fan. I got to meet Vic at Sakura-con last year and tell him that. His Hiroki was wonderfully smarmy and goofy, but also very self-assured and sincere. Another character full of depth from Vic. Hikaru Ichijo, Super Dimensional Fortress Macross Why? Like his Hiroki from P9, this is another collaboration with ADR director Matt Greenfield. Over 39 episodes, Hikaru goes through many changes and genuinely grows as a character. Vic shows great subtlety as an actor, making those changes feel natural and believable. Other: Femio, Princess Tutu Why? It was only one episode, but it was Vic at his most unrestrained. ADR director Jin Ho Chung pushed Vic all the way to the fringes of believability, but it worked. It's a showcase of Vic's comedic talent, an absolutely hysterical performance, one of his finest.

I really liked Vic as Kurz Weber in Full Metal Panic! as well as his role of Edward Elric in Fullmetal Alchemist. Though my favorite role by far isn't even one that he played in an anime, rather it's in a video game. I thought he did an awesome job in his role as Junpei Iori of Persona 3.

One character stands above the rest for me, and that's Takasugi Hiroki from Princess Nine. I think that was actually the first time I became aware of Vic's voice, and I really loved what he brought to this particular role. I felt that Koyasu Takehito sounded too old for the part, and not endearing enough (or enough of a "regular guy"), for an audience to like the character, or to see what he represents for the two lead girls in the show. Vic utterly succeeds at painting a more accurate picture of just who Hiroki is.
Also in my list of favorites: Egg from 009-1 (Ep. 3 character) - Fun and skillfully handled with the right degree of cool. Kunisaki Yukito - There's just something likable and sympathetic about this guy. Or at least Vic makes him so. Who doesn't like the Host from Angelic Layer?? ![]() Hirota Shingo from Aquarian Age - A likable, hippyish guy who's ready to be a pal and to ROCK. Madarame Ikkaku from Bleach - Another fun character to add the list. I'm just about always in stitches when this tough-yet-silly guy shows up. Dextera from Kiddy Grade - Yet another appealing member of the memorable Kiddy Grade ensemble. To this day I wonder why the writers couldn't have had Dextera and Sinistra kiss once. Just once, damnit! ![]() Carrossea Doon - It's hard to describe what is so great about this character, and the way that Vic plays him. I guess that the soft, calm tone he uses gives the man a quiet edge that can only... build to something bigger, as the series progresses. Sugino from Tactics - I suspect that this spot will be usurped by Tamaki of Ouran Host Club in relatively short order, but until I've seen more of the latter series...this is my current favorite of Vic's sillier characters. I also dug Mignogna's turn as the studio exec in Wandaba Style...and the one or two lines that he had as a mouse soldier in Hello Kitty's Animation Theather. I can't seem to recall which episode just now... Last edited by Shsway : 02-03-2009 at 05:20 PM. |

Hiroki - Princess 9
Kurz Weber - FMP Edward Elric - FMA Carrossea Doon - Madlax Mugiyama - Mezzo and a couple of others that I'm forgetting, which is bad of me. Also would like to make a shout out for his role in a videogame, Persona 3:FES as the lovelable class clown, Junpei Iori.
