It was on this day in the Macross Universe, February 7th, 2009, that the SDF-1 Macross was launched for the first time after the ten-year repair job it was given after crashing on Earth. In order to celebrate, I am going to re-watch the episodes that take place on this date.
What fond memories of this classic series do you have? Although I've only so far gotten to the infamous episode known as Pineapple Salad, I've really been enjoying what I've seen so far and it's a shame that it's taken me this long to see the show. It's very charming, has fun characters, and a MANLY theme song. As I complete the series over the course of this month, I'll eventually post my full feelings on the show.

Oh, how I wish I was on South Ataria Island right now. Once you get far enough into the series, you'll understand why.
I only watched this for the first time when ADV did their big release of it a couple of years ago. I really enjoyed it. It's a classic for a reason. I just recently picked up the Southern Cross/Mospaeda release, the other two shows that, along with Macross, make up Robotech. Surprisingly, I've never seen Robotech. I was in the Air Force and stationed overseas for most of the 1980s, so I totally missed it. I'm thinking once I finish watching Mospaeda (I've already watched Southern Cross), I just might get the Rebotech series. I remember someone celebrating the discovery of the Macross 10 years ago on the very forum.

As it turned out, I've just finished rewatching Macross myself (starting at the beginning of January and watching one episode a day). I suppose that my memories of the show are linked up with first seeing bits of it as Robotech and then delving deep into that composite storyline via its novelizations (perhaps unfortunately though, for a while I had fallen in with some fans who just might have been as up in arms over the differences between the novelizations and that series as some other fans are over Robotech not being Macross). Then, I managed to figure out at last that not only had the pieces of Robotech come from Japan, but there were other animated series like it... Ever since I ordered the first Animeigo DVD box set, I suppose I'm a good deal more likely to watch Macross as itself, but I do have to admit that I also remain not worked up on a daily basis over the existence of Robotech.
For all of that said, I'm also interested to hear about someone getting into the series for the first time, and glad that they like it. |

My first SDF was the Clash of the Bionoids dub release of DYRL.
My SDF Macross TV was on VHS first, which got trashed ASA Animeigo's set was in my hands. Aah, Minmay. I'm a fan of the Macross songs & the character of Minmay who always gets a raw deal from fans. Stupid Hikaru. Claudia LaSalle is the coolest female, & Gloval is a better captain than any Star Trek or Babylon 5 commander IMO. My first "wow" moment was Hikaru catching Minmay in his plane as she fell. The TV shower scene is better than the DYRL one. SDF Macross mecha looks very dated now, yet it has a sweet simplicity in the same way as Patlabor, Votoms, Blue Gender & Gasaraki mecha has. Futuristic, functional, practical weapons of war which are very effective in the hands of skilled operators, rather than being empowered/empowering machines than giving its operators semi-godlike powers & invulnerability. What appeals to me most about Macross is its story of mankind's fight for survival. The humanity, bonding, creaky fellowship & lifelike personalities make it an eternal epic equivalent to Moses or Noah from the Bible. SDF Macross is extremely re-watchable for me. Triple dipped so far, & will be quad when it is released on Blu Ray!

![]() I just wish if Macross F movie would be released soon, and hopefully it will be a sequel/alternative retelling of the series not a compilation or any of that crap.

Macross F Movie is another DYRL, they're even reworking Ranka's character (Kawamori pretty much admitted he messed her up in the tv series) in this alternate world movie like they did with Minmei in DYRL. Latest info from yesterday is new songs for Sheryl and Ranka (duh), more love triangle complications (duh) and some atmospheric valkyrie battles *fuck yeah!)

I prefer TV to DYRL Minmay. Ditto Misa. Ditto Roy.
