ADR Awards Rules and Information

Welcome to the Anime Dub Recognition Awards, or, ADRA, presented by the English Track at Mania.com, where English dub fans can nominate and vote for their favorite voice actors as well as the dubs they perform in every quarter (four three-month periods a year). The Awards are open to everyone, including industry staff.

Award and forum administrators ask that ADRA participants, as well as recipients, abide by the rules and requests of Mania and English Track forum moderators when engaged in Awards functions, especially as outlined in the section below titled "Guidelines on Fair Participation and Competition".

If one has questions or concerns about the Awards, feel free to talk to the administrators privately or post in this thread. Administrators and ADRA regulars will be happy to answer and discuss any facet of the Awards.

[0.0] Overview

The format of the ADRA involves a month long period where all eligible actors and dubs are nominated by participants, with selected nominees (those receiving at least two nominations) to be voted on by registered English Track forum members in a week-long period following the end of the month.

Participating in the Awards is intended to be simple, and should be straightforward as possible for old and new participants alike. The following guidelines are thorough and should answer most questions.

• Section 1 describes the nomination procedure.
• Section 2 describes the voting procedure.
• Section 3 explains the guidelines for acceptable behavior while nominating and voting, and expected action for infractions.
• Section 4 defines what is and is not eligible for nominating.
• Section 5 defines, or suggests, Leading and Supporting role differentiation.
• Section 6 describes aliases and how to deal with them.
• Section 7 describes the Dubbies, the year end component of the ADRA.
• Section 8 lists links to past and current ADRA winners, and miscellaneous information.

[1.0] Nomination Rules and Guidelines

• [1.1] The nominating period will begin approximately at the beginning of the month immediately after the end of a quarterly (three-month) period, and will run approximately four weeks until the final Sunday of the month.
  
  
  • [1.1a]A quarterly schedule is made up of four three-month periods: January-March, April-June, July-September, October-December.
  • [1.1b] Months where the last Sunday falls before an approximate four-week period has elapsed may be adjusted an extra week.
• [1.2] A thread listing all eligible dubs will be posted every month. (ex.: "ADR Awards – April-June 2009 - Nominations".) An abridged version of these guidelines, the time and date nominations are due, and any special notes about selections that month will also be included in the root post of the thread.
• [1.3] To nominate, reply to the root post listing nominations for any or all categories, before the end of the nomination period.
• [1.4] There are up to four categories every month for which to post nominations. Requirements and restrictions on nominee eligibility for actors and dubs, differentiation between leading and supporting roles, and the issue of aliases, are found in Sections 4-5.
  
  
  • Best Male Performance in a Leading Role

• [1.5] Participants may post one (1) nomination each for any or all categories.
• [1.6] For performance categories, nominators are requested to list the name of the actor, the role he or she is being nominated for, and the dub in which it appears.
• [1.7] Discussion or elaboration of one’s nominations, considered nominations, and the nominations of others is allowed and encouraged, per English Track forum and ADRA rules.
• [1.8] Every actor, actress and dub that receives at least two (2) nominations by the end of the nomination period will be eligible for the voting phase.
• [1.9] In the event only one nominee receives multiple nominations in a particular category that nominee will automatically be declared the winner and no voting will take place for that category.

[2.0] Voting Rules and Guidelines

• [2.1] The voting period commences the day after nominations end, a Monday (or shortly thereafter with adjustments made to the voting period as necessary), and will run six days until the following Sunday.
• [2.2] New threads for each category will be created every month for that month's voting. (ex.: "ADR Awards – April-June 2009 - Voting: Dub".)
  
  
  • [2.2a] Owing to problems with vote rigging in the past and the inability to verify anonymous votes with the current forum polling software, only registered users are able to vote. We encourage anyone who is interested to register, as registration is free.
• [2.3] A tie in any particular category in the initial voting round will result in an additional run-off poll between the tied nominees, lasting three days to the following Wednesday.
  
  
  • [2.3a] As long as all additional, non-tied choices have been exhausted, remaining ties in a run-off will stand. Multiple three day run-offs may be required to reach a decision. (Example: Four choices out of five remain tied after initial voting. After a run-off, three out of the four remain tied. After another run-off, two out of three remain tied. One last run-off then results. (Note: this is an extreme example.))
  • [2.3b] If all choices in the initial voting, beyond two, are tied, at least one run-off poll for all will still be run.
• [2.4] Winners are announced on a staggered schedule on Sunday night, beginning at 9:10 PM EST and every 10 minutes thereafter, ending at 10:00 PM EST. Participants may simply look to the voting threads to see results, and announcements may also be made during DubReview.com's weekly Sunday VoxBox chat session.

[3.0] Guidelines on Fair Participation and Competition

• [3.1] Advertising of the ADRA, whether in its nomination or voting period, by fans and industry personnel is encouraged and appreciated, but deliberate and organized attempts to influence voting by ballot stuffing or other rigging is discouraged, and may be monitored by ADRA and Mania forum administration.
• [3.2] Should evidence of attempts to unduly influence the vote be discovered ADRA administration withholds the right to invalidate any and all results; participation or eligibility of users or nominees involved may be revoked by Awards administration, and banning may also be exercised by forum administration independently.
• [3.3] In the event of fraud, revised polling in which votes cast will be viewable to administrators during polling, and publicly viewable at the poll's completion, will be used to determine results.
• [3.4] Whether a fan or member of the industry, or both, please respect the effort here to recognize excellence for individual performance or production, not simply overall popularity of individuals or groups involved.

[4.0] Eligibility Guidelines

• [4.1] Only dubs of anime are eligible and are the focus of the ADRA. Dubs of live action, video games or hentai (adult) titles are currently not included.
• [4.2] Dubs and performances included on re-releases or simple repackaging of older titles (a DVD collection of a previous DVD multi-volume release) are not included.
  
  
  • [4.2a] If the re-release or repackaging includes a dub created for that incarnation of the release (a dub added to a previously subtitle-only release, for instance, or a new dub added by a new licensor of the material) the title is eligible.
• [4.3] A dub and its actors are only eligible for the period that portion of the dub is released on DVD. TV airings, theatrical releases, and legal online streams or downloads of dubs either before or after the period of the DVD release are not eligible. Such releases are not eligible until a DVD version is released.
  
  
  • [4.3a] Dubs released in these manners which are not likely in a timely fashion (within twelve months) to be released on DVD will be considered for eligibility on a case by case basis. Please feel free to advise ADRA administration of any such cases as they may arise.

[5.0] Role Differentiation (Lead and Supporting)

There is not a strict definition for what is and is not a leading or supporting role for the Awards. However:

• [5.1] The following are general definitions suggested to nominators, and which may be enacted by administration in order to settle disputes between an actor’s nomination in either category:
  
  
  • Leading Role: A performance where the given character has a major role in the story (e.g. primary protagonist or antagonist), and is on screen and speaking dialogue for a significant amount of time. Often, but not necessarily, will include title characters.
  • Supporting Role: A performance which is not central to, though may nevertheless have some significant effect on, the story. Characters which may appear in every episode of a series, but without a majority or significant amount of screen and speaking time (e.g. narrators, sidekicks, mascots, etc.), or characters which may appear in only a single episode, should be limited to this category.
• [5.2] An individual actor for any single role may be nominated for either Best Lead Role or Best Supporting Role, but not both, in any single release.
  
  
  • [5.2a] In each separate franchise incarnation for a title, or a separate TV season, an actor’s role my be nominated in a different category than what he or she was nominated previously. (e.g. If an actor’s nominated leading role in a TV series is limited to a supporting role in a follow up movie, he or she may be nominated for Supporting in that second performance.)
• [5.3] In most cases, it is up to nominators to decide a role’s category: Whichever category for an individual role receives the most nominations will be the category used for voting on that role. (e.g. If there are two nominations for a role in Best Leading Performance, but three nominations for the role in Best Supporting Performance, the role would only be nominated for Supporting.)
  
  
  • [5.3a] In cases of a tie in voting eligible nominations (minimum of two (2) each) between a single role in Leading and Supporting, the first category to have received the required minimum two (2) nominations would decide.

[6.0] Aliases

Many anime dub actors use aliases for various reasons. When nominating and in discussion in ADRA threads, please always try to use the name of the actor you are voting for that is listed in the dub's credits, which may or may not be the name you are familiar with for that actor. Award administrators and some Award regulars can help if there is some confusion as to which name to use due to faulty or incomplete credits.

[7.0] The Dubbies

The Dubbies are the year end awards affiliated with the ADRA, which encompass a year's worth of dubs and performances. Final rules for the next Dubbies, for 2010, are in the process of being determined.
