Default Question about Initial D dvd's from funi

Been getting back into initial d lately and I was wondering if the funi produced initial d dvd's for first and second stage had the same screwed up video effects that tokoypop included for god only knows what reason. And if they do have them do they show up in the subbed version? I can't remember if the video effects showed up if you selected the subbed version with the tokyopop dvd's but after downloading a few clips I found...yeah I don't think I could stand to watch the whole show with that stuff. Shame too cause rightstuf has both sets for 23 bucks (with limited inventory so it looks like they have gone OOP). If I can watch it subbed with unaltered video, I'm fine with that, but if the video has the weird effects even in the subbed video, I'll be passing on them sadly.

What do you mean by strange video effects? I own both seasons but I only watched them subbed (The Dub SUCKS) and noticed nothing out of the ordinary.

You mean you don't like the "tricked out" versions?! Blasphemy! LOL

These sets are just the same as the old sets. The tricked out video is quarantined to only the English dub. The Japanese language track has unaltered video.

I have to say, I personally am a big dub fan and generally prefer dubs to subs, but I couldn't agree more on the atrocity that Tokyopop did with the Initial D dub. It isn't so much bad performances as much as it is the name and script changes plus (the biggest offense of all) the god-awful replacement music. I mean, one of the best parts of the series is the original music. Still, I haven't seen any issues when watching the series in "classic" mode.

Nana: The video effects were really bad for the dub, things like as cars went into a drift the picture would go negative, or you'd have them split the screen with the picture mirrored on both sides so that the image of the car would actually merge in the middle. And scene changes had various effects like dissolving pixels clockwise rotations or various other crap that looked like it came out of, I don't know, Saved by the bell or something else from the 90's. Watching a little of it was an exercise in pure pain, god forbid actually watching the whole series with that crap.

And yes, the replacement music is so horrid it would fit in perfectly in a horror movie or something it's that bad. It's rare I hear something so bad that I want to actually jab a pencil in my ears but this almost made me do it.

Anyway, glad to hear the subbed version is all right though, since this is a show I don't think I'd want to watch dubbed to begin with even if it had a proper dub, to many of the voice actors have to distinct a of a style to the way they do voices that give this uniqueness to their characters that in english they just don't sound right at all. And it's nothing against the english VA's, who tend to sound perfectly fine, it's just how good certain japanese VA's are and freaking well they match their characters. I'll pick them up sometime since they are pretty cheap right now. Now to just hope that funi picks up 3rd and 4th stage and gives them a normal (hopefully bluray) release.

I have to agree with this 150%

As anybody who knows me on this forum will attest to, I'm a big dub fan and can happily watch dubbed series like Crest of the Stars that others can't stand while wondering what all the fuss is about. But even I couldn't stand the dubbed version of Initial D for exactly the same reasons as Avatar!

Again, I really had no problems with the English dub, but when I heard that god-awful rap music in place of the wonderful Japanese soundtrack, that was it! I switched over to the sub and never looked back. Americanizing anime is just plain agonizingly wrong!

That's exactly why I will watch the rest of ADV's Ghost Stories thinpak when I work my way down to it in my backlog subbed! Changing it to all those american references (especially that god-awful psuedo christian references from that one charactor) is just not acceptable!

Meant to add these my second post but forgot. If you haven't seen how bad the dub for Initial D is, watch these. not the same stuff I found before but you get the idea.

English opening: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2n2LMZEtA_s

86 vs. FD: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IjbJ2IdY6B0

I couldn't even make it all the way through the second video. I hadn't noticed before but they even changed the sound effects. you can barely hear the tires squealing as they drift. But the first minute and a half or so is enough to give you an idea of just how bad it is.

Wow! I couldn't agree more on Ghost Stories too! I love the VA cast, but that script is awful! And I really never understood why so many thought the original was so mediocre - I found the actual story quite enjoyable, even touching at the end.

Gah, I never heard the english OP so I tried a listen. WHY DID I DO THAT!?

Initial D is all about driving fast and having fast awesome beats. NOT RAP MUSIC.

But move raps in the Japanese version also.

I have to agree that the "tricked out" version does suck.
