Default Report: Gundam Unicorn Planned for Simultaneous World Release

The animeanime.jp news website reports on Monday that the Japanese studio Sunrise is planning to release its Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn anime around the world simultaneously. Sunrise had already announced last week that its adaptation of Harutoshi Fukui's light novels was green-lit for release in the winter of 2009. The Nihon Keizai Shimbun paper had reported earlier this month that Sunrise's parent company Bandai NAMCO Holdings is planning to distribute its Gundam franchise in 10 languages — Japanese, English, German, French, and others — within this year.

Sunrise has yet to announce the release format of the new Gundam Unicorn anime project.

So we're going to be getting 00 and "Unicorn" at the same time effectively?

I'll check this out of course, but I know nothing about Unicorn. I'd be more interested in seeing if they do a worldwide release for the 2010 Gundam 00 movie... although the TV series likely won't be done on DVD here by the time that comes out.

Cool. A decision from the top with a release plan.

I say this due to the fact IIRC Bandai (US) has a bunch of Gundam they licensed back when Wing hit big (00ish) that they still haven't released.

All you need to know about Gundam Unicorn is that its main antagonist is a pseudo-Char named Full Frontal. Full Frontal. I eagerly anticipate a dub.

Noooo...t quite.

The magic Phrase That Pays some years ago from Bandai Ent. (US) was that with Gundam it "was not 'if' but 'when'." This, of course, was when Gundam Wing was the hottest thing since the last hottest thing, and there were hopes and dreams reaching all the way to the moons of Neptune regarding Gundam's future Stateside. This did not mean licenses, but merely active interest and pursuit on Bandai Ent.'s part, in addition to a first-right-of-refusal clause for Gundam titles (and a number of other properties owned by their parent company).

Nothing was ever actually licensed beyond what was released here, except for the Zeta Gundam compilation movies, which may not have been a full-out license after all but more of a strong option, as the most recent news (as of, what, last summer?) was that any outside-of-Japan release of the movies was on hold indefinitely pending some decision by Bandai Visual.

Ah. I was under the impression that was more of a solid deal. Anyway that was the vibe I got listening to them talk at a con way back when.

Must learn to read parsed text better.

Didn't they get the Turn A movies a little while ago? Or did I read something wrong?

A lot of people did. And Bandai was perfectly content to let them think that way, largely because they really believed it for a time and it seemed like it was going to be a viable course of business. Then it spent a brief period of time as a rumor among fans that Bandai would never confirm or deny. Currently, it's dead in the water, along with a lot of other promises and proposals from a number of studios.

That's never come up at all, though I would certainly not object to such a license (plus the TV series, of course).

Oops! My bad. Now I wonder what I had been reading.

Maybe I some how crossed the wires in my head of Turn A and the Zeta movies? Now I am curious as to where the delusion came from.

Oh, hahah, that. I remember asking Fence what in hell was up with that name when I saw it on a fanart image of masked Gundam men. Yeah, I definitely need to see this then.
