Default mania writer looking to understand anime

So as I expect many people here don't go to the mania home page (Ed - wait there is a mania home page?)

I doubt many people will see this. But one of the mania writers is asking about anime. Link to the article can be found here.

http://www.mania.com/anime-dilemma_article_115391.html

(Ed - wait you want me to go to the maina home page....)

I gave some suggestions but I thought others might be able to do better as my knowledge is limited. (Ed...really you don't say...)

So go and make some suggestions (Ed - um why don't you just send him here).

Sigh I did Ed, but I don't know if he will come or not, despite what some people like to think this part of the site can be a little intimidating....

Quite honestly I am not sure if coming here would help end some misconceptions about anime considering all the recent posts on a certain subject on here. Anyways I replied and tried to come up with many different examples from more mainstream to less mainstream titles. But it is hard because just because I like something doesn't mean someone else will. I think people who know little about anime think it is all the same thing but it is really quite diverse. That is why we all have different opinions on what is the best title.

But I was happy that the person was trying to make an effort to better understand anime. I really appreciated that. And so far only one stupid stereotypical comment.

I'm not good at recommending shows since there was already a good list posted.

So I tried to add my personal note to "anime discovery". Maybe it helps.

yea thought about the fact we seem to be getting a lot of hentai requests after that but at least he would see you have to mark them as not ALL anime is hentai. Scared though someone is looking for anime with obese characters...

In fairness most of those are DocWatson looking to compile a list with those elements in it (sometimes after being asked on another forum) and not all of them are started as an individual in specific looking for them after the mania writer's post. I haven't looked at the dates but I don't recall seeing any after the post from screen names I haven't seen pre the post somewhere in the anime (coughAODcough) section.

And everyone has different taste. And many of those tastes are completely not understandable to people without that fetish. Or how someone would develop a specific fetish...

Though I have wondered if a separate Adult section like Animenation has might not cause a little less of the "anime is pron" stereotype from being reinforced by new people who may wander in. Or maybe it's own section would do exactly that?

I think this is a great idea.

That's just Doc Watson using every forum he frecuents to add data to his hentai databases, nothing wrong with that, it's better to know what're you getting into in some of those shows

But that's one of the great things about anime, you can find an anime to suit almost any fandom, you got your slice of life, drama, comedies, sci-fi, Uber Freaking Awesome Super Robot shows (Watch Shin Mazinger PPL!) and hentai among other stuff.

Mr. Beverage said at Anime Boston (IIRC it was last year) that the separation of hentai into its own forum(s) will not happen, as he does not want to ghettoize hentai. That policy may eventually change, given the sale of AoD to Mania.com—but one of Mr. Beverage's conditions was that Mania accept the porn along with everything else, and they agreed (paraphrased from his answer to a question at this year's panel at Anime Boston).

As for the other points, Betenoire and Vicserr are correct, though I don't post about porn in non-porn permissible forums.

In all fairness to Zaldar, it was about eight or nine threads before I realized DocWatson actually was compiling some sort of data list (for reasons I'm not even going to theorize), and not just a boring old Variations-on-a-theme running-gag troll beating the same old one dopey "Recommend hentai?" forum gag into the ground, as some of the less researched trolls so oft will...

Apparently DW believes he's a Man With a Mission, but it's still sending out the wrong message, and his digging deeper for loopier niche fetishes is starting to stagnate the variety of threads on the board...Which would be the general function of trolling, whether he believes he is or not.
Some are into hentai, and some aren't (me, I'm not, mostly because it tends to be asinine, plotless, cliche'-bound and badly, badly voiced/animated), but if some fans believe they're Championing Their Niche, would it be too wrong to ask them to champion it in another room? It's not "forum censorship", it's just keeping the tables clean for the paying customers.

...We've got enough trouble burying that old gag already, from those without "good intentions".
And as we can see from that emergency-case columnist we managed to paramedic in time, never underestimate just how clueless those folks in the mainstream frontierlands still are for old 90's perceptions.

(...Yeah, it's been ten years, when are fans going to stop recommending "Utena" to newbies?)

Maybe you could leave the moderating to the moderator staff? If you think he's trolling then send an alert. FYI Doc Watson asked in advance if he could post those threads. We expect those threads to quieten down in time and become a resource for those who do want hentai with a particular fetish. If you don't like them then they're obviously not for you.

The suggestion to make a hentai-only sub-forum has been made many times over the years and Chris has never changed his position on the subject. If you want to try to change this then posting in forum feedback is the correct way to do it. But you'll need a fantastic argument to change something which is a bedrock of AoD's way of doing things.
