Series Retrospective: (Extracts)
Haruka Nogizaka’s Secret –Purity– is a cute and fluffy little romantic comedy, and it largely doesn’t attempt to be anything more than that. That’s just as well, since it often did not manage to keep to its spirit when it attempted more.
…
When it comes down to it, however, this show is not particularly special. In some ways, it is yet another variation on the not-so-cool boy gets a super-special girlfriend, something that is quite common in anime.
…
So, what can we say about Haruka Nogizaka no Himitsu –Purezza–? For someone looking for a somewhat entertaining light romantic comedy, with strong wish-fulfillment elements, attractive female character designs, and a decent amount of fanservice, this show will suit your interests and desires fairly well.
…
Yet, this is not a show that reaches any great heights, and is at its best when it avoids such great heights. The most successful episodes were ones that played with classic anime stereotypes…The episodes that failed the most were episodes 10 and 11, where the contrived drama and easy to guess resolution made for boring, predictable storytelling.
In the end, therefore, while the show may be named for Haruka, the stunning beauty, outstanding student and far above average girl, the content is often much more in line with Yuuto: average and unremarkable. In general, it could be said that the less screen time Yuuto and Haruka had, the more interesting the show was.
